Dude's a 1st pairing defenseman, gotta give to get, especially if Johnson is questionable to start next year

Just because he plays 1st pairing doesn’t make him a top pairing dman. That is a massive over pay. Statistically he is very comparable to Cole.

Cole 26 pts, 19 min TOI, CF 51.7 OZS 38.5
Weegar 18pts, 20 Min TOI, CF 51.3 OZS 47.9

Typing that stuff out makes me change my mind, that’s a ridiculous overpayment. HARD pass.

Weegar is in his prime, and when you adjust for individual impact, other teams top lines have a -0.25xG/60 which is 10% below league average, Cole is -0.04xG/60 which is only 2% below league average, while playing 2nd/3rd ish pair minutes, it's not close

He isn’t facing other teams top lines all the time he isn’t a match up dman. If he were his zone starts would be skewed in the other direction. Regardless of what his x60 the Avs sure as **** aren’t giving that for him. It’s a ridiculous overpay.

This isolates for quality of comp and teammate. How is this an overpayment? You PRAY Timmins turns into the player that Weegar is, it’s an extremely late 1st, and Zadorov is whatever

It’s an interpretive stat not an absolute, because if it was that’s what would be used as the measuring stick in all trades and contract talks. What is a fact is his team gave up the 4th most goals in the league. He scored less points than a 3rd pairing Cole, and had a similar shot suppression even though Cole had significantly higher dzs. It’s an over pay. It’s not even just me saying it’s an over pay. You’re sending a top 4 prospect who they wouldn’t include in a Taylor Hall trade, 1st rd pick and at worst case a 3rd pairing guy for a defenseman that doesn’t score, that his team doesn’t stop people from scoring who has a nice xGF.

Fine. Agree to disagree.

I happen to agree with Weegar being legit, but since the league and its fans still predominantly value players based on archaic stat lines, you can probably sign him for less than that.

Sabres say no to Donskoi. Idk what happened this year but he is well off the deep end.

Zone starts have been proven to be almost useless because <75% of line changes happen on the fly. Weegar doesn't need to be offensive on a team with Makar, Girard, Byram, and saying that Florida had the 4th most goals allowed as a team is a nothing comment. Colorado had the most goals scored this year, doesn't mean Pierre-Edourd Bellemare is an incredible offensive player. I would never use stats solely in analysis, it is just more information and context to add to scouting, and this trade means you added a top pairing Dman for 3 pieces that 90% likely wouldn't be on the roster next year (only not 100% because Timmins could) this move makes them stronger in their window of contention without a huge cost.

You want to give up 2 high end pieces and another quality piece for somebody who at the absolute best is going to be a #3 dman ever with COL, who is going to contribute next to nothing offensively, and literally within a year of acquisition is supplanted by Byram, essentially making him a role player. The team has invested significantly in Timmins but hey you seem to think he is going to suck great for you I disagree. I think your proposed trade is a bad use of assets.

1 high end asset who is unproven until he goes out and performs as a top 4 D in the NHL. a late 1st and a 3rd pairing Man.
Weegar is top 25 in the NHL in Points per 60 @ 5v5. So he does produce.
You plan for the 21-22 season to ride with
Byram - Makar
Girard - Weegar
And I think that is the best consolidation of assets.
I love Timmins! Fact is that the Avs will be lucky if he turns into the player that Weegar is, and I am willing to pay the difference for waiting, to have that guy for Colorado PRIME contending years.

EJ isn't dead. He'll be back and will be around until his contract is up. Paying Weegar that kind of money means they can't pay Makar, Landy, and Gru (not with Hall or most other top 6 options).

It's just not a good idea. I might be more open to it if the cap was riding, but it doesn't work under the circumstances
