No this is fair, I buy that edm is not moving him but this is a very fair offer. If you think JP is going to be an elite winger than I would agree Montreal needs to give more but he looks more like a guy who will hopefully be a good top 6 winger maybe even a top line player if you get lucky and a guy who fits Montreal's need of talent with size on the right side.

Except now if Russel isn't able to make the lineup we end up with
1) $8.5M in cap space on defence for Laval
2) a hope the PJ can actually make top6 forward in a Claude Julien system
3) and Kovalchuk signed to $3M on an overage contract, which means it's against the cap no matter what for 2 seasons.

This is a hail-mary pass to make the Habs better and I hate it tbh. We can't afford another Alzner situation on D and no guarantee up-front to get points.
Cap space would be better-allocated on a UFA like Hall even if he is overpaid.

As much as I liked having Kovalchuck this past winter, I really hope he's not re-signed by mtl.
