Description
Trades are close in theory, I’m sure Cal would want more then just Sam for Monahan. More so tried to create a roster that A) can compete for a playoff spot and B) is under 75M cap hit (semi failed). Roast away.

This looks really good, I'd probably work on the bottom six a little bit, maybe sign Maroon or some big power forward.

Kinda tough to do with KOs contract and staying under 75M. I really wanted to create two lines that have good identities. Cozens being sheltered and having a ton of Ozone starts and Larrson’s line doing what they did last year. I like Lazar and his speed as wel

Prolly, but Larrson was so valuable to the minimal amount of success Buf had. His line flipped the ice more often then not and gave very sound defense, one of the more important reasons Buf had a top 10 5v5 defense. I think if he’s gone we will see a noticeable difference in this

Id look into Monahan's underlying numbers first, moving Reinhart for him doesn't really move the needle towards adding wins to the team.

There's also no reason for the Knights to make that deal. Montour is bad, and they dont really need a RHD with Whitecloud quietly playing very well on the 3rd pair.

Disagree on Monahan. 1) he’d be bumped down a line/responsibility behind Eichel where he’s been asked to do too much 2) playing with skinner would help both of them (mainly skinner) get back to 30 goal production which would def help the win column.
And it depends on if Vegas wants Tuch on their 3rd line making close to that 5M. He struggled this last year as well, prolly because he’s a top 6 guy stuck on the 3rd line. Also depends on who Vegas resigns because Whitecloud is looking decent now, but can he handle 2nd pairing minutes next year? Maybe. And honestly Montour isn’t nearly as bad as the analytics would suggest. Playing injured, on your offside, with Risto as your partner def hurts the numbers. It’s not nearly as bad as you made it out to be.

If playing with Gaudreau didn't help why would playing with Skinner? Quality of teammate is a way bigger factor in results than quality of competition, especially since you only control matchups on home ice.

I think you could be right about Montour on the Sabres, but even before the deal, he was not particularly great on ANA either. At his best he's a chaotic 3rd pair guy. if his QO number wasn't so high Id be inclined to agree with you, but given he wants a raise on top of that 3.5 mil QO the deal doesnt really help Vegas in any way.

Confused as to what you mean on playing with JG and not helping. Underlying numbers are only half the battle. He’s an offensive talent and playing with Skinner would help skinner actually have a talented player to play with, and the drop off from JG to Skinner won’t be crazy for Monahan. It’s not like I think he’ll take a massive jump from JG to Skinner, but he won’t fall off and will be around 25/35 second line center, which falls perfectly for him. Sam is a good player, and if he could play center I’d have him at center instead and save the trouble.

I meant Monahan wasn't good with JG, even by eye test standards. CGY fans are at best frustrated with him and his shooting has seen a steady decline. So if he can't play well with JG, how does playing with Skinner help him( you had mentioned it would help both of them )

His 5v5 numbers were mediocre to average, that usually doesn't cost you Reinhart

He was over a ppg last year, and is only 25... so he had a down year, he had 3 less goals and 4 less assists (5v5 stats) then Reinhart. If we’re gonna sit here and say JG gave him that bump how can we not say Eichel is giving Sam a huge boost (he is). It’s really not that crazy.

At 5v5? He was not over a ppg. You're right about Reinharts boost, but thats exactly why i started with "look at the underlying numbers" because point totals in general have so many variables involved that often arent an indicator of talent (like playing with stars for instance). Monahan doesnt drive possession and for every quality chance he generates he gives up twice as many by being bad without the puck. Thats ultimately the deal breaker for me as at least Reinhart is competent in this area.

No of course not 5v5, there may be one player that does it 5v5 and that’s McDavid. Reinhart doesn’t drive His own line either. When he got the opportunity he faltered hard. Monahan may not have positive metrics but it isn’t 2/1 chances and his chances seem to do way more damage on the score sheet then not. Reinhart isn’t getting you much more then him if traded. But the point of my post was to A) compete and B) stay under 75M as there’s talk of Pegulas cutting cap. Reinhart at 7M isn’t going to make this team competitive imo, and while I would like to add to him, unless Cozens blows up (certainly possible) we might be looking at another year out of the playoffs and another year wasted of eichel

If the idea behind this is cost cutting then your first move has to be ristolainen, in terms of dollars to role he's the worst value on the team, closely followed by Montour. Moving them out and replacing them with appropriately paid 2nd/3rd pair guys takes care of the problem. Then your move for 2C doesn't have to be salary in/out and you can get a bit more creative.

Sure, that was a thought. It’s also a bit much to be semi realistic though.

The Jackets are not interested in a 2nd-for-Anderson trade; if you want to make that happen, extend him an offer sheet and hope he signs it.

I mean that trade has been posted repeatedly with little pushback. It’s fair value, If you don’t particularly like it fine.

There's been consistent pushback from multiple fans who follow CBJ closely. I'm glad you've deemed it fair value; we haven't.
