You’re close here. Tavares doesn’t outrank Dahlin though — the 5-year value of Dahlin is higher than Johnny T because of age, position, and cap hit.

Give me Dahlin and Parayko over Rielly and Dermott every day of the year.

Defense is improved, but the Matthews for Cozens swap hurts quite a bit. So even though the value is interesting, I don’t think this is the right path for Dubas to take.

Nylander seems like the only real option. I think TOR would be "crazier" to even consider moving any of: Matthews, Tavares, Marner, (Rielly, obviously).

So if the only option is to do a 1-for-1 swap, Nylander is the only guy on this roster that can bring back the right quality. Cap hit is a big reason for that.

That said, I think a package of Kapanen + Kerfoot + one of the young D prospects who won't be on the Leafs roster in 2020-21 is also an interesting way to go after a 2nd pair RD. But you won't get a 1st pairing RD with that package, and if that's the objective, then Nylander is the only real option.

Eichel is better than Matthews and costs $1.5 million less. Matthews can score goals but he can’t set anybody up. That’s why Marner plays with him, he can pass. Matthews is a pretty one dimensional player.

Ah, i see you have no idea who auston matthews is. Matthews not only scores significantly more goals than eichel, hes better defensively and his assists are mostly primary ones while eichel relies much more strongly on secondary assists which means hes letting someone else do all the lifting

Eichel carries the entire offense in Buffalo currently, everything runs through him. Toronto bought Tavares so Matthews would have a playmaker to carry the burden. On another team Matthews could not carry the offense, he needs someone else to get him the puck. You don’t have to like it, but it’s true. Buffalo’s hometown superstar is in Chicago, so we’re not buying one like Toronto did.
