Carolina tries again

Description
2019 offseason was a bust, time to try again.

Not sure on the Vancouver deal. Does Vancouver want a goalie that can play a good 1B role and have to worry about long term/ draft protection?
Wennberg is bought out. We give him a 1 year try out to play under a different coach.

This is about the best case scenario for the expansion draft. We would only require protecting Staal, Aho, Turbo, Svech, Kerfoot, Geekie and Foegele. Only leaving career AHLers exposed on O. Slavin, Pesce, and Fleury on D, only exposing Gardiner.
Busy off-season though. Trying to re-sign Palmeiri and Hamilton. Brodin and Wennberg probably walk. Raanta may walk if Demko takes over the net. If not we have a really good tandem until Koch is ready.

some nice ideas, but 10 players out and 7 players in? Never happen.

And that 4th line of 10mil? or third pairing of 6.5mil, that's too much for guys getting 10-14 minutes a night.

CAR worked wonders with what they had in goal, but not sure raanta is the guy.

I love this. Obviously it's basically a 0 on the realism scale, but in a fantasy world it's fantastic. Sets them up to make a run this year and plenty of room in 2021 to resign Svech and Hamilton while doing whatever you want with the goalie room and finding some depth. I also think Wennberg would be a really good fit in Carolina if we buy him out.

Edit: the only thing I may change is finding a different alternative to Raanta. He's a solid player, but not a major upgrade from Marazk and I think he'd be what holds the team back. I'm not sure of a perfect solution, but signing Markstrom to something like 3x6.5 or so may make sense.

Staal isnt a 3rd liner if we want to compete. At the same time he will play 2-3rd line minutes but we need a 3rd line that can score. where they are as far as line number isnt important as their function. Raanta is my choice on who to trade for because of his short contract and he is usually way up there in GSAA.

In the end, this isnt realistic.

carolina needs a stud goalie and a defensive defenseman for that 3rd pair. missing pesce was big for them. im sure dougie was exactly 100% out there either. But just the goalie. they need the goalie.

If Wennberg wasnt on as long a deal, I would consider trading for him. I think he would be great in the up and down system RBA runs.

Raanta may not be the guy but he typically has strong statistical years. We could keep Reimer and not make a trade for Raanta. I am not sure which pair is better, Raanta-Demko or Reimer-Demko.

Trocheck didn't exactly make a case for the Wild wanting him in Carolina. I'd rather keep Brodin, extend a center they already have, and look for a different deal down the road if this is the best they could find.

what is the add? I cant imagine its very big. The need for a center is strong in Minnesota and Trocheck has an extra year. Canes have coveted Brodin for a long time.

Trocheck didnt excel offensively but he had a very strong playoff. He didnt have a LW partner that was worth much. Rangers and Boston took Necas out of both series. Tro was by himself out there. Tro plays all situations and is strong defensively.

CAnes go for value. We didnt sign Lehner last off-season and I doubt we go there again with a higher price tag. Marsktrom probably stays in Vancouver. Holtby and Murray arent attractive at their price tags based on their statistics. Raanta has value and no long term requirement. Not a lot left after that.

The Wild already have a strong defensive center in Erickson Ek. They need an offensive guy.

all im saying is the team is pretty solid. they just need a better netminder than mrazek and reimer.

Not to mention if Guerin really wanted to trade Brodin for Trocheck, he could have done so when he was still with Florida at the deadline. I think that ship has sailed.

The rumored asking price for Brodin from Carolina at the deadline was Necas and it sounded like they were unwilling to make that trade, understandably.

the last two seasons he was on a 50 point pace. This season was better until he had to learn a new system for the last 7 and had 2 points.

I dont think so. Florida may not have been looking for a Center for defender trade at the deadline. Carolina gave up a 2C (rental) and 2 4Cs. Florida may have only wanted more center depth if they were trading Trocheck.

Creative deal for Vancouver. Well done.

With Juolevi and Rathbone, Vancouver needs RHD. If Bean was a RHD, I think Vancouver jumps at the deal. As is, I think it’s close, but Vancouver passes.

They need something closer to a 70 point center, which I completely understand they're not getting 1 for 1 for Brodin. He'd be part of a package for a player like that, if they traded him. Most likely they just keep Brodin and extend him.

Florida probably was very interested in Brodin as they were with Skjei. If I was a betting man, Florida wanted to do futures and move a defender back (rumored NYR trade). NYR and Minnesota werent looking for those type of deals. Minnesota wanted a center and Florida isnt rich on centers either. NYR wanted cap space, Florida has a ton of defense already (we do too but 1/3 was injured)

"As The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun speculated in his notes column Tuesday night, the Wild have expressed interest in Florida Panthers center Vincent Trocheck in advance of Monday’s trade deadline, The Athletic Minnesota confirmed via multiple sources this week.

General manager Bill Guerin does not want to trade defenseman Jonas Brodin, but if the Wild were to obtain a package that includes Trocheck, the price would almost assuredly be Brodin, who has one year left on his contract and will command a significant raise from his nearly $4.2 million.

The Panthers are looking for a left defenseman to skate alongside Aaron Ekblad and the Wild have long been after a center. " Michael Russo, https://theathletic.com/1621725/2020/02/20/wild-canucks-shootout-alex-galchenyuk-dean-evason-kevin-fiala?source=user-shared-article

" Trocheck’s production has been down the last two seasons, so there’s that. But he’s 26 and on a very good contract which carries a $4.75 million cap hit for two more years after this season.

The Panthers have no problem scoring goals and have forwards in their system ready to make the jump.

If a team makes an offer featuring a bona fide top-four blueliner who is signed past this year, I think Panthers GM Dale Tallon has no choice but to at least consider it.

I wonder about Minnesota as a potential fit. Jonas Brodin is exactly the type of quality, left-handed, top-four D the Panthers would need. My sense is that Wild GM Bill Guerin is increasingly inclined to keep Brodin in the fold. But, if teams call, he’s going to listen. And I do think Trocheck is a player of interest for him." understandable. Tro may get to 60-70 point threshold if he is playing 1st line minutes. If the deal doesnt work, it doesnt work. Trocheck is an easy keep for us. Adding Brodin would be fantastic and help us keep the dollar value low on goaltending.

I dont think this makes your case as much as you think it does. It sounds like Florida wasnt going for a center for defender trade, that article just says Tallon should consider it (they have no idea what Tallon wanted). At the same time, Florida ended up trading Trocheck for the 2C rental, 2 4Cs and RHD prospect. The speculation says the trade for Brodin was there. The evidence says Tallon wanted more center depth and some futures.

The evidence says Tallon wanted more center depth and some futures.

The article states "the price would almost assuredly be Brodin", I dont know how much more clear you want it to be.

I mean doesn't really matter, still don't think we move Brodin for Trocheck.

again that article is speculation at the trade. It doesnt say it was ever on the table, that Geurin made the offer, or that Tallon turned it down. The writer is speculating what Tallon would want/consider for Trocheck. Then the actual trade for Carolina happens. Im not sure what is more likely to prove the desire of a GM, speculation of a writer or an actual trade. You decide.

Creative deal for Vancouver. Well done.

With Juolevi and Rathbone, Vancouver needs RHD. If Bean was a RHD, I think Vancouver jumps at the deal. As is, I think it’s close, but Vancouver passes.

Bean could play on his off-side. I dont think he has done it in the AHL very much.
