I mean, with Nurse, Klefbom, Bear (who looked really great by the way), Bouchard, Larsson, Samu and Jones, using a guy like Broberg to upgrade your top 6 might be wise. You guys need O more than D. And youd still have money to sign a guy like Hoffman or Dadonov
I doubt we'll see Hoffman or Dadonov in Oiler silks, off-season signings like that just don't fit with Holland's approach to building a roster.
Broberg and Bouchard, appear to be the future 1 & 2 and Bear is already a top 4 NHL d-man, I don't see Ken Holland trading any of those three. Klefbom is the current #1, so I don't see him moving this year or next. Trading Samorukov is unlikely to net the kind of return the Oilers need in order to improve immediately. Of the Oilers you identified, I think Larsson is the most likely to be traded, but I would be only mildly surprised if Nurse was moved in a block-buster.
A couple names that haven't been mentioned are Kris Russell and Matt Benning. Russell's $4M cap hit and M-NTC/NMC are a bit of a problem. I believe that for next season he has already been surpassed on the depth chart by Caleb Jones. Holland would like to keep William Lagesson because he is a relatively inexpensive NHL-ready LHD who is bigger, more physical, a better skater and a better passer than Russell, but he needs a qualifying offer and will no longer be waiver exempt next season. Matt Benning requires a qualifying offer as well. His analytics are outstanding, as long as he is playing in a 5-6 d-man role. However, he must be qualified with a minimum offer of $2,000,000, which in this day and age is a bit rich for a bottom pair d-man, and he takes up a roster spot that could be used to ease Bouchard into the NHL. In order for Edmonton to keep Lagesson, one of Russell or Benning has to go. Neither is going to fetch a top-six forward, but a legitimate 3C is possible, and opening a spot for Lagesson adds insurance should Seattle grab Jones in the expansion draft.
