Rielly for Ekblad Explanation included

Description
This can be seen as a beneficial trade for both parties. For toronto they finally acquire the top pairing RHD with locked up term. They dont have to worry about a Rielly extension, and they dont have to touch the Big 4 forwards. As for Florida, Covid hit the team hard. They are wanting to shed cap pre-covid and now with the revenue lost they will be looking to shed more. For starters the trade looks like florida is taking on more cap. But to break it down, this is a trade that keeps them competitive while shedding 5-6M. Firstly, Rielly saves them 2.5M off the books. Looking deeper into it, Florida will not be looking to keep both hoffman and dadanov. Both, will be looking to make around that 6M AAV range. Johnsson is a very good placeholder for one of those signings for half the price. He can immediatly be placed in the top 6. Lijgren is now the sweetner that seals it. An A level prospect ready to make the jump. Florida will be looking at a D core surrounding Rielly- Weegar, Yandle - Stralman, Matheson - Lijgren.
Questions for each team:

TML: How do we afford Ekblad: " in the grand scheme of things, your potentially saving money depending on what Rielly asks for in 2 years when the cap is still static.

FLA: How do we sign Rielly in 2 years or what if he walks: " I think management will know where rielly sits in 2 years. If he seems to be enjoying life in Florida a contract will be in place. If not I dont think itll be a hard player to move. But Rielly at 5M for 2 years is something that intrigues florida especially due to the losses incurred during covid.

Huh, the Panthers trade actually makes a lot of sense. I think Toronto's d-core looks pretty good, and it doesn't hurt Florida at all. I like their d-core as well.

I personally think youre over valuing the TOR side by alot. Really is really a solid piece. Can't deny that. Hes got 2 years as you've indicated, but he's more an offensive dman vs a 2way dman. Rielly may not even fit Florida's system. Q loves 2-way dmen. Not offensive dmen. Its why Matheson lost so much ice time. Also, for an offensive Dman...you should probably put up more points than Ekblad which he didn't. It's a GOOD thing to have Ekblad locked up for 5 years. I think youre trying to spin Rielly's two years somehow as good. Its not. If he doesnt fit...they 100% F'd up and then he'll walk. If youre trading away your younger cornerstone you gotta be sure. I do like Timmy in the trade...I guess the cap dump known as AJ can be in the trade...hes not a positive...hes a negative. You gotta drop the 2nds and still send more to Florida.

Keep in mind Rielly played practically the entire year injured before finally waving the flag to sit out. Prior to that Ekblad hasnt surpassed him in points in recent years.

I dont agree that AJ is a cap dump. His contract is steady and and is an above replacement level player when healthy. Also lets florida to pick which of hoffman and dadanov they want to keep without having a gaping hole

Couple things. Fair point on Rielly. I want to acknowledge that. I still don't think Q will be thrilled with him. AJ makes $3.4M. That's $2.4M too much. He was literally the 4th most assisted olayer in the entire NHL and play 86% of his play with Matthews. So ANY acquiring team needs to be aware. Flordia is essentially required to put him next to Barkov in order to achieve is mediocre success. Florida has better cheaper bottom 6 forwards. They have Accari and Vatrano and Connolly.

To the cap. Florida is gaining cap...not losing it. So I simply don't understand how this helps them with Hoff/Dads. I dont think you're suggesting AJ can replace Hoffman...right?!?!

I think Johnsson is a significant upgrade to half of the bottom forwards. He can be placed in a top 6 role as for Acciari Is more successful in the bottom 6.

Florida is addding cap via trade, but reducing cap overall because johnsson will be half the price of one of the Two FAs and can fit in the middle 6. If Vatrano outperforms AJ then swap them. Atleast the Left hand side is solidified and has no voids. I dont see Denisenko making an immediate impact so a guy like Johnsson for now at a cost control contract is fair. Also for financial reasons AJ contract the last 2 years is only 36% of the total contract fee and 750K base salary. More front loaded contract which toronto has teh financial ability to do

Rielly proposal is interesting.

Anaheim would never do that deal though lol I'd love it but Murray isn't that dumb. You'd need Chiarelli to be the GM for that one!

I asked if you thought AJ could replace Hoffman/Dads and this response is a Yes...at half the cost. I just need to make sure you understand what youre saying.

Im not sure where you're getting you significant upgrade information from. Seems like a simple bias to me. Dubas did a cardinal sin and gave a guy a contract off 1 year of performance. And it was an ok year at that. Now TOR needs to unload him. Were never going to agree on AJ.

I'll belive it when I see it. But what I've seen is that he's a capable 3rd/4th liner. Maybe if an injury occurs he can be a poor man's 2nd liner, but if youre expecting production...forget it.

a guy who has played in 7 NHL games in the 3 years since he has been drafted is not an A prospect. Trading for a pending UFA with your stud RHD is foolish.

D Men take longer to develop. Reasons why Foote, Vaakaneinen and Timmins haven't made the stride yet, but have shown great progression in the AHL. All three will end up being top 4 defenceman in the NHL within the next two seasons.

What?

Essentially if the leafs were not looking to shop rielly and rather look for a partner, Mackenzie Weegar would be perfect

This is a massive steal for Florida. Rielly is the best player and you are giving up a former 1st round RHD who is 21 and a very good depth forward for a top RHD. Terrible trade

Exactly, which is what they’re doing. They aren’t going to move Rielly for Ekblad when the whole point out here is to find someone to play with Rielly. If anything the leafs are helping Florida because they have someone who can play with Rielly

Not really. Both are great and have different strengths and weaknesses. And considering the fact a future dman is also being traded, it’s a no. They need more, so they can’t trade dmen to acquire more
