The 'Canes 1st round pick was a gift from Toronto for relieving them of the Marleau contract cap crunch. Any opportunity for Carolina to increase its value is something Don Waddell will have to consider.

My proposal is that Ottawa can trade up for that pick and end-up drafting 3rd, 5th, and 13th, overall. At 13th overall, Pierre Dorion can draft one of Askarov, Holloway, or Quinn. Dorion & Co. are on record saying their scouts see a number of good players in the 10-17 range.

Carolina gets the extra pick at 52nd overall.

Afterthought: Ottawa should probably add another pick as a sweetener, since 13th overall is in the top half of the first round.
