Realistic trade destination for Marner

Description
Melnyk is a poor owner who has frequently has his GM trade for player whos cap hit is higher than the actual salary. If the leafs trade him after his signing bonus here is his year by year salary that Ottawa would be paying

20/21: $700k (leafs pay signing bonus)
21/22: $10,358,000
22/23: $8,000,000
23/24: $8,000,000
24/25: $8,000,000

Marner's cap hit: $10,893,000
average payment per year by Ottawa : $7,011,600

you can **** all over the trade if you want, my point is Ottawa seems like a viable trading option for Marner

Yeah big no from Ottawa. I wouldn’t do it for the 5th overall alone. I’ll give u Lassi Thomson + Duclair or Connor Brown + Logan Brown + Isles pick + 1 or 2 2nd rounders. Take it or leave it. I’m not offering Formenton, Batherson, 5th overall, Brannstrom, JBD, 3rd overall, Tkachuk, Norris, etc

By your logic, Nylander is more likely, Leafs pay his signing bonus so he gets $2.5 million next year and 3 more seasons with $6 million cash. A little above $5 million AAV in real cash for 4 years of a cap hit of nearly $7 million.

Also only a lunatic would pay $14.3 million to someone just to get rid of him, even in divorce court that'll be crazy.

the leafs print money and payed a hell of a lot to get out from under Babcock. they payed Brown's Zaitsev and Marleus signing bonuses last summer before shipping them out.

You could do it with Willy too but I'd rather trade Marner. Marner is better (not by a lot) but he is overpaid by 2-2.5 million. That being said it really depends what the offers are for both players.

Imo Marner for #5 makes sense for both, provided that Drysdale is available at the 5 spot. Wouldn't include Batherson though, kid will be a stud

Leafs get their cap relief and their RHD of the future, and could potentially go out and get Pietrangelo or other help.

Ottawa takes a gamble on a prospect (as everyone always does) at #3, then gets a surefire star instead of the #5 pick that you'd hope turns out like Marner. Ottawa is in no cap crunch, and as the original poster pointed out, the contract structure is very economical.

Imo:
Marner + Holl + 2nd round pick + 3rd round pick = #5OA + Connor Brown

Gives OTT some reassurance and stability, and puts more fans in the seats. Gives TOR cap relief and what they need for the long run

Marner is a great player and he had a bad playoffs so there are a lot of low-ball offers I see on here. If you trade Marner (an elite talent under contract is his prime) you need a blue chip prospect, or a top pairing RHD under the age of 27 + a roster player or two. Just because he's overpaid by 2ish mill doesn't mean his trade value is completely tanked. ELite talent is hard to come by, you need to pay a lot to get that elite talent even if they're overpaid by 2 mill

He’s not signed for 8 years either. No thanks

The problem with this scheme is that the 2020 draft occurs BEFORE the Maple Leafs pay Marner's signing bonus for 2020-2021. I suppose this could be covered by "Future Considerations," though.

I think thats fair lol.

Were notting giving A1 assets for overpaid A1 talent and no team control.

OTT is willing to offer a whole ****ton of B and B+ assets though, and cap relief
