Description
The Lundqvist trade is just a substitute for his retirement, which seems very possible. Not actually suggesting he gets traded to Detroit. The Rangers new wing depth means they can trade Kravtsov + a first for a center and Im going for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Not sure if he will want to stay in Edmonton beyond next season so I could see Holland cashing in. Strome's rights to Florida is kind of a placeholder deal but they clearly need a 2C after moving Trocheck and I think 2 2nd rounders is fair value for Strome. The Lundqvist retirement and the Strome trade means the Rangers get to keep Fast. TDA signed to a short deal which will eventually be moved when Lundkvist signs. Don't know why Lafrenière is spelled wrong.

Lundqvist isn’t waiving for Detroit so this a moot point and if he does it’s for a buyout which we’d need compensated. RNH is staying with Edmonton as they’re competing...

what about Trade with the purpose of Buyout like Steve Mason with WPG and MTL?
Would Lundqvist be bitter enough to decline a trade if he knew buyout was the only option and he'd be payed regardless?

or is buyout in NYR the only option for him ?

Read the description. There isnt a single cap dump here, the Detroit trade is a placeholder for Lundqvist retiring since that frees up his cap space. Im not actually suggesting he will be traded to Detroit haha

Read the description, I literally addressed this haha that deal is a placeholder for Lundqvist retiring since Capfriendly doesnt have that option. Im not actually suggesting he would get traded to Detroit. RNH is in the last year of his contract and has made the playoffs once in his time at Edmonton. 5 of those years have included McDavid being on the team. I wouldnt stick around for that.

I don’t know him personally so I don’t know if he’d be bitter but he definitely could be bought out by another team if he waives his NMC.

Cap friendly has an option to delete a signed player. You also didn’t address why Lundqvist would leave money on the table and why there isn’t a cap recapture penalty for Lundqvist since his cap hit exceeds actual dollars owed. Or why Holland would sell RNH when they are competing for a cup but rather “they want to cash in”. I think Holland wants to cash in on another cup and you do with bonafide NHL players and not magic beans. Plus you’d think McDavid would be pissed that you’re shipping off one of the only quality top 6 guys outside of the Big 2. How many of those 5 years had a HOF GM vs Chiarelli at the helm? Edmonton has some good young pieces and needs to add to that not subtract.

Lundqvist wouldnt be leaving that much money on the table at this point after taxes and escrow. There would be no cap recapture if he retired, I checked that. Holland would sell RNH because he has a year left on his contract, its entirely possible he might leave. They arent competing for a cup, they couldnt even win a pretty easy play-in round.

Me personally I’d would never speak on someone getting “their money”. There is a cap recapture it’s article 50.5 in the CBA for players that have earned more in actual dollars vs. cap hit and then proceed to retire (prime example is Luongo). We also don’t know what marketing contracts the King has outside and what stipulations are on those contracts. Escrow is maxed at 20% and he has said publicly multiple times he wants to stay in NY.

RNH may leave EDM or he may stay. Holland could also ship off at next years TDL and easily get a 1st + or keep him as a rental considering they are going to try and compete. The same could be said to all of the teams in the lottery yesterday about not being able to beat an easy play in round. I wouldn’t put too much weight on a series after how many months of quarantine? Does that make them all sale upcoming UFAs?

You may be right about the recapture penalty, but to my knowledge, it would not apply to Lundqvist. It has been reported that if Lundqvist retires there will be no cap recapture. There are a few CBA enthusiasts on Rangers twitter and they have confirmed as much as well. If that's wrong, it's wrong.

https://puckpedia.com/salary-cap/answers/lundqvist-retiring-cap-hit
https://nypost.com/2020/08/05/rangers-split-is-the-only-easy-part-of-henrik-lundqvists-next-step/

https://twitter.com/StatBoy_Steven/status/1292449108238770178 This link has the reasoning but it is a twitter link. Essentially it is because Lundqvist signed his contract under the new CBA, not the old one like Weber, Luongo and co. There is no recapture for a 35+ contract either because Lundqvist was 32 when he signed the deal

Im not saying definitively that RNH is going to leave, but hes been there his whole career and has made the playoffs once. At some point that would give you pause. What I am saying is that he is a player I think the Rangers will target if they end up with enough space.
