Sure the value is good for the Leafs but they don't need more offensive defensemen.

I don't disagree that Nylander is the only meaningful piece the Leafs can move this offseason, but I don't think Dumba is the piece you want coming back. Too much of a two-way guy.

Reilly himself is an offensive defenceman, and finding him a responsible partner is as simple as signing DeMelo in free agency. If you're trading Nylander for a defenceman, it's for a bonafide offensive stud that you stick alongside Muzzin for 24 minutes a night.

I just don't see any defensive dmen available to be honest, and while I'm a big DeMelo fan I think its totally possible he has peaked already and could turn into a disappointing signing. Pesce for Nylander + could make sense but i really cannot see Carolina trading him

Defensive defenceman are a dime a dozen. DeMelo on a three-year deal to babysit Reilly cannot hamstring the Leafs. No need to overpay for one of the elite defensive guys, you already have a quality one in Muzzin, and it's not as if Reilly's an ass in his own end. I keep seeing Jensen-for-Johnsson deals and even that would fit.

What you need is someone to eat minutes with Muzzin without being a burden on possession. That way, the Leafs' two top pairs can genuinely afford to play for upwards of 45min a night. Right now the Leafs have been trying to shelter guys like Sandin, Holl, and Ceci across all three pairs and it always results in some form of weakness being exploited. Once there's real strength across those top two pairs, the Leafs will see a night-and-day transformation on their blueline.

For the record, Dumba's career high in minutes is 28:32. He can log them if he has to. He typically averages around 22-26 minutes in any given game.

Dumba is as offensive defenseman as you can get and would likely pair well with Muzzin.

That said, no way in hell I do this trade. It's fair, and I actually like it quite a bit. But we aren't trading either Dumba or Brodin unless we're getting a top six center back in the trade.
