Détails additionnels:
Sutter has had a good playoff run. I don't think at this cap he will fetch a good return, but he's played well enough that he isn't a cap dump like everyone called him out on before.
He would be a very good mentor player in OTT

too many defensemen, not enough roster spots - Gavrikov's surge and Kukan's extension (I don't think Savard gets traded now) allow Nutivaara's value to be explored.

Why would Ferland retire and leave nearly $10M on the table? He's only 28 years old.

Practically the first thing Ferland did the other night was instigate a fight -- strange behavior by a guy with a concussion history.

Ottawa declines both offers. Sutter would be taking ice time away from one of the kids, who quite frankly deserve it more. In addition to that, Ottawa's cap space is a weapon this coming off season and there's no way they're taking on Sutter's cap hit without getting something decent out of it, and I don't see why they'd help with Baertschi out of the kindness of their heart either. LOTS of teams are looking to shed cap. Ottawa is one of the few who can take it. Nothing gets you nothing.

There's that injury related retirement - Clarkson, Horton, Zetterberg, Franson .... that type, where they get paid but are on LTIR infinitely.

They didn't retire, they're just injured and unable to play. If Ferland is medically incapable of playing hockey ever again, then I'm sure that could be an option. However, if the Canucks are going to try and pull a Joffrey Lupul and say that he's injured when he's not, I think the league will step in and put a stop to that.

Well. at this point he's spent the entire season on and off the ice due to concussions. If he is unfit to play because of this issue, then it's not faking an injury. He legitimately is injured.

CBJ trade is very interesting.

The cap dump trades not so much. The cap is gonna be tight and thus dumping players is quite likely to cost more than it normally would as the cap space in itself is valuable asset now. I don't see neither Sutter or Baertschi garnering a positive value in any kind of exchange at this point.

Also doesn't terminating Baertschi cost you something anyway?

What are you talking about? He's been injured for long periods of time due to concussions and has just left the bubble and returned home I've gotta think he goes on LTIR and is probably done

He still has 3 years remaining on his contract. There's still a lot of time for him to recover before the end of his contract. I'm sure he won't rush things coming back and may very well miss part/all of next season, but I don't think the Canucks can count on his contract going to Robidas island permanently.

The Sven offer isn't to OTT, it's just me having to trade him to remove him from the team. This is essentially what Bogosian did.

He had just under 8 months off and his second game back was sent home, he's done and taking a year off won't change that

Sidney Crosby has just as bad of a concussion history as Ferland, missing the better part of two consecutive years after concussions and he came back.

Slightly different when your game is built on being a physical presence.

Besides, this thread is not to say that this WILL happen to Ferland, it's exploring the potential. At this point, I don't think it's fair to rule out him taking this route.

Fair enough. I'm just pointing out that the decision isn't up to Ferland. If he unilaterally decides to hang up the skates, then he doesn't get paid out the rest of his contract. Doctors would need to decide that he's no longer medically capable of returning to the NHL ever again. If that happens, then yes, he is as good as "retired." At 28 years old, I'm not so sure a doctor would be willing to say that though, as the long-term effects of concussions are difficult to predict. The NHL would probably investigate as well, just as they did with the Hossa and Lupul situations.

If the Canucks simply decide that he's "retired" and replace his salary with other players, then by some miracle Ferland does become fit to play again, then the team is going to be in trouble, as they will have to make some immediate moves to get back under the cap.

Infinitely? That’s like, a really really long time.
