Description
I believe Dougie will stay a Cane.

Lets say Dougie plays a full season and puts up 70-75 points. I think he stays on the Canes for 9.75m at 8 years. Unless some team comes along at gives him 10.5m (which isnt likely IMO).

Lets say Dougie has one of the best season of a Dman in awhile 85+ points. I dont think he stays in Carolina. Someone will offer him that 10.5/11m contract which the Canes should not do.

Lets say Dougie 'only' puts up 40-50 points. As a Canes fan I would still pay him the 8-8.5m.

As much as I love Vatanen I dont think he will be on the Canes next year. He would be the perfect gu to fill Dougies spot if he doesnt resign.

The issue isn't Dougie. If it was just Dougie, we'd be fine, even giving him 11. The issue is that Svechnikov is up at the same time and there's no way in heaven or hell he takes 7 mil

If we give Dougie 11 mil I quit being a hockey fan.

What makes you think he will get more than 7 mil on a bridge?

I look at Point as a comparable

See how he's scored 2 lacrosse goals, got the first hat trick by a Cane or Whaler in the playoffs ever, and ya know is only 20? That's why.

Dang 2 lacrosse goals makes a difference wink

I mean we will see, but I think anything over 7m on a bridge is crazy... You might see 7.5

I'd expect 16 over 2 years. 3 years CANNOT happen because then you're re-signing the entire SAT line at the same time

If we're looking this far in advance, I could actually see them trying to go long term, to be honest. A 3 year bridge deal means that they have to resign him, Aho, and Teuvo all at the same time. That never ends well...

The whole (around) $7 mil thing worked for guys like Tkachuk and Point, and to a lesser extent McAvoy (not $7 mil), because, with the previous CBA, the qualifying offer after the bridge deal wasn't based on AAV, it was based on the salary in the last season of the deal (ie. Tkachuk=$9 mil).

So, on his next deal, Tkachuk either gets qualified for $9 mil, extended at $9 mil or above, or doesn't get qualified and becomes a FA. It will be interesting to see what changes will happen!

Point might be fair comparable, but a potential offer sheet could certainly raise his salary. As good as Hamilton was this year, the Canes might only have the choice of either Hamilton or Svechnikov long term.
IMO the younger guy is the player to keep. Betcha the Kings and Sharks are going to have regrets signing Doughty and Karlsson to their expensive long term deals.

Thanks for the feedback.

I longterm deal is probably in the Canes best interest because they can probably sign him for longterm cheaper right now than if they were to sign him again in 3 years.

These offensive D-men that sign long term, high AAV contracts when they're going into their 30's are a dangerous business. Pietrangelo buyers beware?

It will cost more than a 2022 2nd for Seattle to take Gardiner. Depending on which system Caro!in a uses, 7/3 or 8, Seattle would have to pass on Bean, Foegele, Morgan Geekie,Fleury. All better choices than Gardiner and a 2nd...

Dougie isn't really an OFD tho, he's still really really good defensively

One of Foegele or Geekie will be protected... All depends if Fleury resigns in Carolina. And as you can see by this team, I did not resign Bean (we can trade him before hand, or let him walk).

So options could be limited for Seattle. The 2nd to take Gardiner would be a good deal for Seattle as they get a top 4d for their team (as much hate as Gardier gets, he could be very good on Seattle,(Vegas effect))
