Cozens might not be ready yet, if he is they shouldn’t force a 2nd line role on him like they did with Mittelstadt. Kahun probably shouldn’t get $3 million as he has bounced around the league and has yet to excel beyond 3rd line duty. Olofsson has had 1 very good season, this is bridge deal to prove he can continue to produce beyond 1 year. Teams will make adjustments as they learn how to defend against him.

You should make it 2 years for each player on these deals then as they would both be UFA at the end of 3 year deals. The Reinhart, Ulmark, Virtanen and Montour contracts are all about a million low. Cozens shouldn’t start in the top 6 unless it is on the wing. He should start 3C or 3 RW until he is ready for 2C or 2 RW. Putting him back in Juniors is a waste of a year on his ELC. He was already the best player in the WHL last year and likely is not pushed to develop any further at that level.

And why not? It’s a 300% raise based on 1 season’s numbers.

Montour gets dealt in this scenario, his contract doesn’t matter. Virtanen hasn’t earned $3 million a year, he is a younger Jimmy Vesey who plays more physical. $2.5 million is as much as Ullmark can think he’s worth. In the frozen cap NHL I think it works against the players in negotiations, that’s why Reinhart gets just over $6 million.

Reinhart only signs a 1 or 2 year deal if he feels he is not getting fair value or he signs an offer sheet. Ulmark could easily draw an offer sheet from a team like Chicago or Edmonton.

No this is wrong. The guy has talent, and hes shown it everywhere he plays. Good hands, great shot. I had him pegged for 30 before the season, and he was heading that way before injuries. I dont think you are horribly off, but thats more because of leverage than ability. If hes only getting 3, probably take a year off. He does need to prove it again if he wants a longer deal, but im sure his agent will gamble on his production and try for less term.

Nobody is offer sheeting reinhart, certainly not at a figure that we wouldnt match. Stop and imagine a team offering 8 million per over 5 years, whats the compensation?- a 1,2, and a 3? You would get a productive winger with absolutely no flash to their game for 8 million in a flat cap league and give up multiple picks to boot. If they offer 6.5, we just match. League average or slightly above average goalies would have the same problem- nobody is going to offer a ton and we would just match it anyways

Which teams have both the money and the picks to make an offer sheet on a top player? If Reinhart gets an offer sheet it’s probably $7 million or more, at least a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in compensation. With 2/3 of the league in cap hell (and Buffalo isn’t) who could make that offer?

I also expect I also expect Buffalo to be more proactive with their own free agents, considering most of the team are RFAs.

I agree we likely match whatever he is offered but if Vancouver or Calgary or Boston offer sheet him we are looking at likely a late first in a bad draft next year

Colorado has a lot of young talent they need to lock up soon. They don’t want to be tying up 7 to $8 million in one player and give up significant assets to do it. I don’t believe that Adams will let Reinhart sit long enough to be given an offer sheet. He and Olofsson are the top free-agent priorities. Kahun comes in third there.

If Adam's is trying to get him at 8 x 6.2 he sits for awhile. There is no rush for Reinhart to sign a deal of he doesn't think it is a fair offer

Maybe, but I think the tables will be turning in the favor of the organizations over the players. There has to be an end to these inflated salaries so every team can afford to compete. Otherwise the NHL becomes the NBA, a league with five teams that matter and then everybody else.
