Why would Philly do this? A team loaded with prospects? Firstly it frees up salary and roster space by dealing two quality players that are not key to this team in JVR and Ghost. Both have upside and still produce, albeit JVR's salary is about 1-2mil too high. Ghost is just 2 years removed from 65 pt season and on reasonable contract, JVR is a stable 20-25 goal, 40-50 pt 3rd liner, and both have value.
Acqusitions in Mete, a solid, bottom pair likely, capable, but possibly upside limited, young, LD, and then a slight salary dump/contract filler in nice point producer Dzingel, on his last year under contract.
With Laughton, Raffl, Dzingel, Niskanen as UFAs after next season, leaves tons of money, in cap space, with only automatic re-signs in Sanheim and Hart, and few other holes to fill. Also doesn't expose key players to expansion, with likely one of Hagg or Mete being selected.
UFA pickup Shattenkirk, just 31 yrs old, doubles his current salary on a club on the rise, as a steady RH top 4 dman, probably locking down 2nd pair with Sanheim, with Myers probably supplanting UFA Niskanen on 1st pair after the season. Solidifies defense for a few years. Although Ive put Shattenkirk, there are many options for RH dman available in UFA or smaller trade for similar monies (3-4.5mil).
AHL is still packed with depth AND high end talent with Rubtsov, Suzuki, Bunnamon, Ratcliffe and Allison at forward and Zamula, Wylie, Hogberg, and Morin on defence.
Leaves prospect and callup pipeline unblocked if a youngster surprises, while giving regular minutes to frost, farabee in time.
Overall it leaves the team with cap space and allows them to stay together long term, while continuing to develop youth.
I screwed up Lindblom at 1.05mil, hes 3mil, which still leaves almost 700k in cap space
The only way this trade happens is something like Ghost + 4th rounder for Alzner + < Insert C prospect here > + 2nd
MTL just burned Romanov's 1st year of ELC. That suggests they want him in the NHL next year. We already have plenty of 2nd/3rd pairing LHD. We need a FIRST pairing LHD, not Ghost...
I find it funny how often habs fans say they don’t need LD or centres been saying that for 5 years now and from an outsider looking in that’s a lottery team until those areas are desperately addressed.... can wait for prospects but by then prices best days will be long past Weber will be using crutch’s and the RD will be in worse shape than the left side is now.
i dont see the Canes taking on extra salary and years with their own long term cap issues, unless they move out other salaries first (ex. Gardiner, Skjei, Nino)

I would do as a Habs fan this trade... value is little off on the pick but one on one & MTL add a 4th... should be enough has today Ghost play 6-7D and Phily need cap space

Dom, are you actually saying you'd do Mete vs Ghost?? Maaaannnnn Plus the picks??? Jeezus!
Ok, I will compromise: Mete + Alzner + 4th vs Ghost

We need a top pairing LHD, Ghost isnt that he is barely a top 4 dman, and an over paid one at that. As for centers, Danault has become a very good center, Domi iss a top 6 center and ourt youth depth at the position is set so we actually have a surplus of them

We need Ghost on PP... play him 3rd pair 5 on 5 I don't care but our PP sucks and Mete doesn't generate enough.
I really think that Ghost worth the Extra 1,5M$ more than Mete as he should get a new contract around 2,5M.
In regards of our C- we have depth but NO Formal 1C... many project but still no proven one and I really like Danault... on a shut-down line
your trade proposal is: 7th defense (overpaid) vs 5th defense, 2nd and 5th round picks,
It's like MTL send to PHI: Kulak (not overpaid) vs Robert Hagg, PHI 2nd and 5th round picks...
So, R U ok with that??

Dom, I 100% agree we COULD use Ghost on the PP. But the flat cap + uncertain draft + weird UFA changes everything... That capacity for MB to take on salary in this scenario is worth a lot. But I can't see him spending that money on a #5-6 Dman. I think it'd be better to spend it on an upgrade to the top-6. Be it a proven #1C or a scoring winger, I don't care.

We need help on the PP but I dont think that comes from Ghost. I mean you say we dont have a true 1C yet Danault out scored Reilly, Bergeron and many others at 5 on 5, just because he doesnt add 20 points on the pp isnt something to say he isnt a 1C.
In the end, I think they ride it out and wait for Caufield to come in, Suzuki and KK to develop and right there you have an improve, cheap PP unit

I like the Ehlers scenario a lot...
I wish he could get a REAL 1C ready NOW... but as we are waiting for at less a decade or two as even Koivu was not a formal 1C... We need to fixed our PP badly... and next year you will have Mete @ 2,5M sitting on that same 3rd pair with no PP sucess if we don't adjust.

I agree that MB would wait 2-3years for Suz & KK to become a TOP C-duo... but can we wait?
And I really like Danault... he is a STUD but would be perfect behing Eichel type of 1C... and Danault doesn't have Tarasenko next to him... maybe next year he will have Laffy
I would do that Ghost deal. Anyone who thinks MTLs defense core is "good" isn't watching.
Ghost has more to give he just seems to not want to do it in philly anymore. He can easily be a 40+ point dman in MTL. EASILY. Habs PP is atrocious.
Mete is still worth more than Gostisbehere rn. Ghost is worth a conditional 3rd at most for real, because if he plays like he’s been playing in Philly as of late, he would be more of a burden than anything since he’s paid 4M.

And if he plays like any of the years prior to last year (Thats 4 other years) he's a steal.
If you only look at what the player has done recently and base your entire opinion of that player on that, you'll miss half the league and some real gems. But more importantly you'll be paying full price for players all the time. A good GM finds those players and pays less for them.

I agree, but you have be careful. Sometimes those players end up like Galchenyuk. Scored 30 goals and can’t return to that form with Arizona, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Sometimes, players are one year wonders. I wouldn’t be opposed to acquiring him actually, but for the right price. I prefer Mete to him at the moment and I wouldn’t trade a second for him (maybe the CBJ second at most, but it’s a stretch). I’ve watched Ghost a bit and what J don’t like about him is his defense and the fact that he can’t really play 20 minutes a night in Philly, which would be an issue, since the main goal in acquiring a pick-moving LD is to slot him with Weber on 5v5 and PP.

You are assuming I would deploy him as a top LHD dman. He's getting top PP time and bottom pair EV time on my team. He can also play his off side on the right below Weber and Petry. Which right now is a weak spot on the Habs.
I like Mete but he is being held in such high esteem that isn't really warranted. He's a bottom pairing dman on most teams and on a good team a 7th dman. He hasn't earned anything else yet. Maybe he improves but as of right now, I'd take Ghost over him easily. Plus Mete will get 1.5-1.75M on his next contract. The difference in cap isn't huge and your getting a real PP producer which the Habs sorely need on the back end. If that Toronto exhibition game wasn't proof enough, I don't know what else to tell you.
By all means if we can get a Miro Heiskanen instead that's the ideal pickup........... He won't cost Mete and a couple picks though.
Juulsen, Noah
Shaw, Andrew (2nd,3rd,7th)
Mete, Victor
For
Ghost
Morin
2nd
He was asking for Drouin 🤣🤣🤣
Now PHI would take that deal on a heartbeat
A lot happens in a year, Ghost a lot of injuries this year and the Flyers caught fire without him. Needing a stay at home in Hagg and Braun and not needing another puck rusher in Ghost, and now on the verge of expansion with a flat cap. For the Flyers, they want to move salary, not take on salary, (Shaw), but in hindsight I take that deal now.
And its always interesting how fans of other teams look at stats, and call Ghost a 7th dman, without looking at what the team has besides him (4 other puck rushers with 30+ pt capability), injuries, the team jelling when Ghost was on IR, prospect pipeline, etc... If you think Ghost is worthless, you're not giving a rational evaluation. Do you think Ghost gets 20 mins a night before provorov, niskanen and sanheim? Of course not, and PHI lacks stay at home types, which means Hagg and Braun get ample 3rd pairing time. Ghost has value, maybe not to MTL, but evaluating him in a tunnel without looking at the other factors... (For that matter its like saying JVR = Domi based on production, or that Drouin has negative value as he barely played this year)
Maybe that deal is too much, and maybe MTL is not the destination, but I don't think its honest evaluation.
