Keep Petro AND Steen

Description
Jeremy Rutherford just commented in a recent article that there's "no appetite" among management to buy out Alex Steen. He means a lot to the franchise. So how would re-signing Petro work if you can't buy him out?

IF we can get Petro at the Josi deal or less and IF we can deal both Jake Allen and Tyler Bozak at full cap hits and IF we can get Dunn at $2.5 or lower, we can actually get in BARELY under the cap, only moving 2 players.

Just move both to Detroit for a retained helm and pickard. They then have the option of making them deadline deals

Flyers aren't biting on that, not much room cap wise once we sign everyone and adding a $4 million backup won't help.

If not giving better assets away with them, at least take a less return.

I mean your goal is to get cap right?
And I thought Pietrangelo already rejected 9ish million?

%s wise, a 3rd and a 5th is worth more than the 2nd you got and you will have retained to get it.

Bozak's M NTC, might be a trade problem....though Bozak is on a good contract. Pietrangelo....flat cap, the market has changed since pre Covid. 8.5m or so might be the max deal now, especially if it means signing with a good team.

Everything is different now with the flat cap so what he has or hasn't rejected in the past (and every "rejection" thus far is speculation anyway) isn't as meaningful. $68mil might be his best offer now and the Blues can offer that

Exactly my thought. I am not against having Allen as a backup, we just cannot afford him with our current cap situation.

Doubtful not proven enough over 3 years. It’s it a consistent stat line. He should take the bridge deal to get more for a long-term deal.

Technically he did reject it, and still under these circumstances I didn’t know why. I really don’t think anyone is going to pay a 8 figure sum to him based on history of aging defenseman like Doughty and Karlsson crapping out.

It'll definitely be a problem. He can reject 10 teams and if you cut out the bottom 10 in the league there are very few teams with cap space to send him to. Montreal is one of them that may not be on his list that Blues even COULD trade him to. It'd be a minor miracle if Armstrong was able to move him at his total cap hit. It may be a situation where the Blues have to pay someone to take him. We'll see.

It'd be technically possible (Flyers have about $9m in cap space for next year), but tight. With Allen at $4.3 Flyers would have about $4.7 million for 4 players to flesh out the roster. Not a "good" situation but not impossible. If you bring Braun back then yea there's no way. Blues may have to have a different dance partner for him.

That's always the risk right? If you sign him to the 8 year deal you're hoping for, what, 3-4 really productive years? Hopefully? Then you get "something" out of him for the next 1-2 and years 7-8 you assume are just dead years? That's been pretty much par for the course I feel like.

I don't know who would be paying Petro THAT much more on the free agent market where he'd also want to go and could compete for a cup. Even the teams with cap space likely wouldn't shell out for him because it's just a waste of money frankly. I think if the Blues offered him the Josi deal or even slightly less ($8.75 AAV?) at 8 years he'd be foolish not to take it. I don't know how much better he can do on the free agent market for a team in any better of a circumstance, and also for 1 year less. But I guess we'll see.

That includes resigning Myers, NAK, and Patrick. I find it really hard to spend than much on a backup unless we have other deals working to ship out salary.

Yea maybe not. San Jose? Buffalo? Calgary?

Washington could be a possibility. They pretty much have everybody locked up for next year and Jake Allen would be a great upgrade from Phoenix Copley backing up Samsonov.

I guess however you slice it, Blues would need to find a way to move his whole cap hit on the 1 year plan.

I look at WSH as the best spot because Allen would be in a very similar role where he’s backing up a young talented goalie. Binnington raved about Allen’s mentorship on his run last year. There’s also trade history between the teams so it seems plausible.

Yea playing around with their Armchair GM they'd have some decisions to make on defense if they take on Allen's full cap hit. Brenden Dillon would be the big question. If they bring him back it might be a long term deal to keep the AAV down so maybe there's some room there. But yea it'd be a hard sell to get the Caps to take on the full cap hit with some re-tooling on defense and possibly re-signing Kovalchuk and Travis Boyd

I hadn't seen that. If he has, I would assume that was pre-COVID. I think several players are probably kicking themselves for not getting extensions in place pre-Coronavirus and the prospect of a flat cap for 2 years.

The only contending team that has the cap space to sign him is Boston. To do so they'd have to let Krug walk and probably someone else. That would screw up their left side D. They also don't really need help on the right side with McAvoy being the number one and decent players behind him. So I don't think it makes sense for the Bruins to do it.

The teams with the cap space either (1) aren't (probably) attractive to Petro and (2) aren't going to be spending that money anyway. The only contracts non-contenders are taking on are high AAV, low cash deals for immediate assets. Makes zero sense for them to sign a high profile free agent in a zero income sports economy.

With a flat cap for 2 years (at least?) the bargaining power has shifted back to the Blues. We want him, we could make it work, and there's really no other contender that would pay him the same or more.
