I understand the argument for Kubalik to have more value for Toews, but I would not discredit Toews' success for Trotz's system. If anything, Trotz's system is vastly overrated & the reason why they've conceded so many goals is because of elite goaltending. Over the past 2 seasons, the Islanders are a bottom 10 team in zone possession differential, shot differential, scoring chance differential & high danger scoring chance differential. These stats indicate that Trotz's system has not been very effective at preventing other teams from generating offense.

Toews on the other hand, has put up extremely impressive individual numbers. He's near the top of the league in offence created as well as defensive contributions (shots & scoring chances prevented). The fact that he's been so good on a team that performs so bad is a testament to how good of a defenceman he is. EeCCGHlWkAEq5qr?format=jpg&name=small

To your point about Keith, yes, he was one of the most valuable defencemen in the league during his prime. However, his performance over the last 2 seasons have dipped dramatically. He's near the bottom of the league in 5v5 defence & doesn't add much value to special teams. I guess you can put him on the bottom pairing to see how it goes. You still have 12 million left in cap space anyway.

Filter through Pulock, Pelech, Devon Toews. Pulock and Pelech get rolled out against the best lines. Sometimes Devon Toews shifts out there just because Pulock is a beast. I'm not trying to suggest Devon Toews is a bust. Please don't take it that way. I'm just saying NYI should probably keep Toews and play him with Dobson. CHI should keep Kubalik because I think he'll score 40+ goals next year. He got 30 this year when he started with 8-10 ATOI. He scored 30 points his last 33 games. He's just a rookie. I think both teams are better off.

As for the system. I think the macro affects are night and day. Worst to First in goals allowed. Much of the same defenders. Even Greiss's numbers went from .892 to .927.

I’m not saying he’s a bad coach , he’s just overrated. Doug weights system was basically a pond hockey style, any system with structure would have seen the isles improve significantly in terms of goals against.

Like I said, Mitch korn deserves more credit for the work he did with lehner/greiss

AND who brought Mitch Korn from NSH, to WSH, to NYI???

Ok, credit to trotz for having a goalie guru on his staff. His system still stifles offense and he refuses to play young talent. There’s a reason why he’s only made it past the 2nd round once in his career.

I feel this is one of my better packages for Marner. Yes, he could get more especially with salary retention, but I feel it's in the ballpark.

I mean once in his career with the Isles, right? Won the Cup in WAS, no? BUT I do agree and understand the "old school" mentality of veterans. As a Hawks fan it was one of Q's downfalls too. Refused to allow rookies proper ice time to develop. Hexy with PHI refused to bring up Hart which clearly Hart was ready. I hear ya.

Yes I think Chicago will be happy to keep Kubalik, but in my armchair team, Lafreniere, Kane, DeBrincat & Marner are taking up the top 6 spots at wing, so there's no room for him. That's why I traded him, they're loaded up front, they could use some defensive help especially w/Keith declining on the top pair.

It's true that Toews has so far only been used on the 2nd pairing, but since they're also getting Brodin, they don't need him to play a bigger role in the time being. You could look for other options like Vince Dunn or Jakob Chychrun, but even their QOC is not very high.

Perhaps you could trade Kubalik for someone like Theodore (VGK) or Lindholm (ANA), but IDK if he has enough value to get a defenceman of that caliber. Another option you have is to trade the 1st overall pick for an elite LHD & keep Kubalik. You can still have an elite level team that way.

    1-remove the retention
    2-replace Saad with Boqvist
    3-move the first to 2020
4-add a 2nd this year or next, whatever

done, You have Marner's value to the Leafs if they want to trade him to chicago. Does Chicago do it? probably not, but then i dont care. That's what marner would cost if they want him bad enough, minimum

The only time trotz has made it past the 2nd round is the year he won the cup with Washington, and according to caps fans the main reason they won is because backstrom injury forced trotz to play vrana in the top 6.

Trotz is so stubborn it’s self defeating. He will scratch a young player for making one mistake but old grinders are given a long leash even with continuous bad play.

If trotz had someone else making the lineup decisions for him based on skill/results , the isles offensive numbers would be nowhere near as bad.

That Marner trade is one of the worst yet. A realistic package coming from the Hawks would include Boqvist and Cat. You're such a troll mao

    Quoting: mondo
I feel like that honor should go to Torts or Julien.

This is another non nonsensical trade from mitchmarnerelite, where Marner is simultaneously the greatest player in the league but also is a terrible person and worth spare parts.

It's funny how you guys are all insulting my knowledge & calling me a troll when the actual problem is you're way overvaluing Marner. Marner for Debrincat & Boqvist? I hate to break it to you but Marner has less value than DeBrincat 1 for 1. This can be proven by stats.

Yeah I definitely don't think Chicago accepts, especially if the 1st turns into first overall. But I can understand why Toronto wants that much.

That's true, but the ones where he is red, it's very low. DeBrincat is more well-rounded, that's why his value is higher.

Trash D core? Are you serious?

Brodin was statistically the best shutdown defenceman in the league this season. His scoring chance prevention and offensive zone time prevention were at the top of the league. Toews is also very good, he ranked top 10 amongst defensemen in scoring chances generated and top 15 in scoring chances prevented. Both are easily top 10 LHDs currently.

    EeCCm5HX0AAkF2K?format=jpg&name=smallEeCCm5HX0AAkF2K?format=jpg&name=small

Boqvist was decent as a rookie this season & he has elite potential. Mitchell has played tremendously in college & looks to become a solid top 4 D. Alongside excellent & responsible partners like Brodin & Toews, they should develop very well.

I suggest getting a clue before coming here to spit out nonsencial ignorant takes.

No way should the Hawks trade Kubalik...bad move. He netted 30 goals in his rookie year, on pace for 36 goals in a 82 game season....how many rookies have done that? I didn't respond to the last AGM because it makes zero sense to move a guy like Kubalik right now.

Forget that Marner trade, Hawks don't need to take on another huge contract right now given the cap space and are better off with a 1st rounder and Nylander. Murphy and Saad could be moveable.

Keith is a lock to play 2nd line; he's still strong just not as a first liner anymore. No need to acquire both Lindholm and Brodin, one or the other. I would NEVER consider trading the #1 pick for Lindholm, Alexis is a franchise potentially generational player...Lindholm is not.

Seabs and Shaw are not on LITR...well maybe Shaw in another year, and definitely not Keith...no offense but this idea is crazy given the all important cap space to account for.

Thanks for the feedback. I can understand the thinking in not wanting to trade Kubalik because he was one of the best even-strength goal scorers this season & will only get better. If you are to keep both Kubalik & Lafreniere, then there would be no need for Marner & you can roll something like Kubalik-Toews-Kane, Lafreniere-Strome-Cat, Kurahsev-Dach-Nylander which is still quite lethal.

To your point about Keith. Indeed, he was the best defenceman in the league during his prime. However, his performance over the last 2 seasons has declined significantly. He's still decent at generating offence, but his even-strength defensive play is poor as he is near the bottom of the league in ability to prevent scoring chances & zone entries. He doesn't add a lot of value to special teams either.
    EeCBsfIX0AAtkBr?format=jpg&name=small

Obviously it would help for him to not play on the top pair, but IDK if he's going to be effective on the second pairing either. Maybe, but based on his results, he is a negative impact player overall, so it only seems ideal for him to sheltered on the third pair. This is why I traded Kubalik/Lafreniere for another high caliber LHD (Lindholm/Toews) & brought in 9 million dollar Marner to replace one of those forwards.

I guess they can just keep De Haan & either resign him or sign someone solid at free agency. He's a very solid shutdown defender, but there is a lot of uncertainty because of his injuries.

Not trading 1OA straight up for Lindholm

Bowman would be fired for trading first overall for Lindholm. He is a top 4 D but not worth Laf at all! Not even close

Yeah, Not even Lindholm and Zegras. Laffy is EXACTLY what the Hawks need. I'm confident they'll figure out the rest. Niemi won a cup too. Can't trade Laffy if we get him.

Thanks for the feedback. Personally, I value Lindholm as a top pairing number 1 defenceman on an excellent contract. However, I agree that Lafreniere should have more value to him. Would you trade him for Shea Theodore?

id take laf over hughes and chabot

dahlin may be a bit risky

Lafreniere is going to be a bigger star than both Hughes & Chabot but he could easily become a bust as well, so it's unlikely for a team to trade a D of that caliber for him.

I pull the trigger on that marner trade in a second. If were gonna sign brodin as a ufa why trade for lindholm just keep the first

Maybe I could've just kept De Haan. Would've been able to keep the 1st that way.

    I think Lindholm is a #3 defenseman. I'd do 1OA for Theodore + 2nd rounder (or something equal to a 2nd rounder)
