Description
I thought Wadejos123 had a nice post earlier today. I thought I'd add to it. His idea though.

Strome and Kubalik both get offers for 5 year $5.5M. I think Stan accepts both of those and works with other pieces to make it happen.

DET is going to play Saad and then flip him at the TDL with 50% retention for a 1st round pick. They're just upgrading the 2nd rounder to a 1st because Zach Smith is included.

Doesn't have to be NJ, but it makes sense for them to want a defensive Dman. This could also be Maatta, but I decided to switch it up a bit.

If they do end up doing all of the above, I would be interested in either giving Shaw some 1st line time or potentially a guy like Kurashev 1st line time, just cuz I dont really want to break up the Nyl-Strome-Kane line yet

I don't see the benefit here at all for Detroit. Yes Saad is a very good player and at only 27 would be nice to have but Detroit isn't giving up a 2nd for a rental. I could see see a sign then trade maybe but a 2nd is way too much to give up for 1 year of Saad. With Smith if he comes with Saad so be it but by him self he isn't worth a whole lot to Detroit.

Too much risk in this for Detroit. Our 2nd round pick will very likely be pick 33-37ish so if we acquire a 1st from a cup contender, we might only be moving up a couple spots. Also, Saad could very likely regress with Detroit since he'll be playing with worse players and we might not get a 1st back. If the Red Wings were going to do this, I'd rather do it at the TDL where we'd be the 3rd team in the trade where we retain salary for a draft pick.

Problem is this Saad is very good player, but I hate when ACGM suggest a team can flip him for a 1st or whatever. If he gets hurt we get nothing, if he plays poorly we get less, if he is ok, will not he brings a 1st.

If he can bring a 1st why not trade him yourself. Why because he will not bring back a 1st.

I just have issues taking on cap for other players in final years of deals to trade them at deadline. Too many variables.

It's to upgrade the 2021 2nd for a 2021 1st. That's the reason DET does it. Heck maybe he'd extend there, but if all else fails it's just for a better pick and helping the younger guys develop with better players around them.

The point others are trying to make is that there’s no guarantee that Saad will return a 1st at the TDL (gets injured, underperforms, etc.) and since the Wings have a high 2nd it’s high risk low reward

Yeah that's the problem. That pick will most likely be in the one of the first 5 picks on the 2nd rd and maybe he signs isn't a risk Detroit would take with a 2nd rd pick. Make it a 4th and if Saad resigns it becomes a 2nd.

I hear you. I thought I posted a response, but I must not have hit enter for some reason. I can't argue too much if that's your opinion.

I personally don't think GMs make trades in fear of injury when there's no history of it. 78-82 games in his last 6 seasons. If there was a history, then yes I would certainly agree. If no injury history then this argument could be used for any trade at all, no?

I also don't think teams like BOS or PIT will look at Saad the same way even if his play did decline in DET. They'd look at it as what he could bring to THEIR team. I'm not suggesting he's Taylor Hall by ANY stretch but you could probably get more than just a 1st too. Heck Pageau got a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd....and he DOES have an injury history.
