Description
Could a team trade a player to one team, who retain salary and trade that player back to the original team? For Example, could the Canucks trade Beagle to Ottawa with Stecher who then retain 1.5mil and trade Beagle back to the Canucks

In theory yes they can I don't know if it has ever been done before bit you would think Ottawa would want more than Stetcher as compensation for the retension. Plus with Vancouver needing major cap help I don't see them wanting to take Beagle back even with Ottawa retaining 1.5 Mil

i mean what would be the point lmao u would just be getting full cap back anyways

How do you figure? Van trades Stetcher + Beagle no retention for 7th. Ottawa trades Beagle to Van 1.5 Mil retained. The only cap hit going back to Van is 1.5 Mil.

Probably not.

The CBA is purposefully vague on how it defines salary cap circumvention. In this situation, they're trying to keep the same player on their team, but for cheaper. This would probably be stopped by the league as a textbook case of cap circumvention.

It’d essentially be the same ordeal as what happened with Orpik and the Caps back in 2018, only then it was a buyout and not salary retention. League was pretty firm on putting its foot down and saying no more, so I’d only assume this scheme would be veto’d by them.

Didn't Calgary buyout Stone and re-sign him?

Yes, but it was Calgary who bought him out. With Oprik, Washington had traded him to Colorado to be bought out and get resigned. In that case, Colorado took the hit for the buyout and not Washington.

I may be wrong, but I think teams can't trade a player, and then trade back for him within a certain amount of time. I want to say it's not allowed if it's within the same season, but I'm not sure.

Regardless, I think any deal of that nature would very clearly constitute cap circumvention, and the League would never allow it to go through.

That’s cap circumvention.
