Cap dump
VAN
After all the other moves in this AGM there's $4.22m capspace unused so I figure that it makes sense to pickup a 1 year capdump to pickup some extra assets.

Baertschi would only have a $2.2m caphit if buried in the AHL, where he'd at least be a useful player having been a point-per-game scorer at that level this season.

$2.2m capspace is worth a decent amount fom Vancouver given their cap squeeze, so I figure that they'd have to offer a couple of decent mid-round picks to move that dead salary.

Why? You'd be lucky to find a team that's willing to help you out of your cap mess this cheaply.

Baertschi isn't a big deal and his contract expires in a year anyways. They really only need to trade Loui

No one is going to take on Loui's contract, fat chance. You might have had a chance at moving it before the flat cap since some teams might have wanted to reach the cap floor, but now I doubt any owner is going to want to take on that much dead salary when revenues are down.

Your best bet of shedding salary is to attach modest assets to Baertschi and Sutter. Moving both of them would save you $6.7m capspace.

Next year they’ll keep EJ and Girard together at least till Byram or Timmins forces their hand, and no way we help VAN out with their cap situation unless they REALLY make it worth while.

Hmm, it could go either way I think. Girard - Johnson is a great shutdown pair, but Byram-Timmins might be a bit green as a pair. I think Byram-Johnson and Girard-Timmins would make for a couple of great pairs as well.

As for the cap dump, yeah it would probably need to be something good. Initially I had it as 2 3rd's but changed it. Cap dumps are a bit tricky to value. The point here was more the fact that we would weaponise capspace by taking on a small cap dump.

Then they are in the same position next year again you can easily move Loui it's just gonna cost you a 1st or Demko and a pick

Well next year Eriksson will only have 1 year remaining which makes it far easier to move. Nobody is going to take on Loui this offseason without sending a bad contract back, that's just how it worked with the Lucic and Neal swap for example.

And regardless of Loui I think Vancouver would still benefit quite a bit from moving Baertschi and Sutter's cap hits, even if they also move Eriksson.

"Easily move Loui" are the three most laughable words anyone has used on this site in a long, long time...

I think it's' close -- very, very close. Make it the 2020 first instead of the 2021 and I think it's perfect for us.

I have one sympathetic objection. I like Carter Rowney because he's a real honest hard-working fourth-liner and he deserves to play every game. I'm not sure how much ice time he would get with that loaded right side. (He was the perfect RW for Derek Grant, and I'll never get over that trade.)

Thanks, glad to hear that you like the proposal. It might not have that one high-end prospect you want (eg. Timmins), but I figure that you still get an adequate direct replacement in Donskoi along with two nice future pieces in Helleson and the 1st.

I'd rather add a later pick or prospect than swapping the 1st to 2020, or just remove Rowney if that helps.

Maybe I'm just overly invested in scouting the prospects available around that part of the 2020 draft, but I get the sense that it's a deep draft with many players that would be good fits with this Colorado team. HockeyProspects.com thinks there's 27 "A" grade prospects in this draft, so a late 1st in 2020 should get a good prospect.

A 2020 selection will also yield a prospect who's likely to impact the team in 2023 (compared to 2024 probably) which works better for us as we're going to need some ELC's to fill out the roster in 2023 when Mackinnon, Byram, and Kaut get their new contracts.

Regarding Rowney, I figure that he'd be the clear 13th forward as we'd keep O'Connor in the AHL to refine his offense and PKing a bit more, so Rowney would likely get fairly regular action as chances are we'd probably have an injury or two at any given time, in which case he would just bump up to the 4th line. For perspective below are the games played by forwards beyond the top 12 this season (in a 70 game season):

    Kamenev 38
    O'Connor 16
    Tynan 16
    Wilson 9
    Kaut 9
    Megna 8
    Dries 5

Bowers will likely get 9 games like Kaut did this year, but beyond that there's 92 games (or about 100 if you pro-rate it for a full season) worth of games to go around which Rowney would have first dibs on. In effect he'd primarily get those 38 games Kamenev got, at the very least, which seems quite reasonable.

Keep in mind that Kamenev himself was injured a bit. He would have played more had he been available, instead of the likes of Dries and Megna getting games.

Plus, no offense intended, but playing on a contender might be a bit more enjoyable for him than playing on a bottom feeding team...

Btw, what's the reason for Rowney's catastrophically bad CF% and FF%? His possession stats are truly atrocious, is that a reflection of his game or just the team he's on?

The team he's on. Nineteen points in 71 games is pretty darn good for a fourth liner, particularly one who didn't play with Derek Grant all year (they were an excellent penalty-killing duo). He's my definition of a quality depth player. By the way, he spent most of his time at RW, not C.

Thanks for clarifying. Sounds like our guy! grin

1 year at $1.1m who can PK and take faceoffs, great. And that allows our kids to stay in the AHL and develop more. smile
