Description
JE NE SAIS QUOI

What player or players do you think have the best underrated, misunderstood, misevaluated, or neglected set-of-skills?

Personally, for MTL, I love Gallagher's game for bringing something that I have never seen any other player bring quite like he is capable of doing.
Namely, no other player looks like he can give 120% effort every night. He just has an unexplainable knack for willing a goal in -- as if it's the last thing he'll ever do.
The funny thing about it is it often looks like he's playing above his skill level, or that he's just lucky with the kind of goals he's able to score. BUT he's now solidified himself as a 30+ goal scorer in many people's minds.

Curious to see what other players are considered 'unique' in that sort of way ?

**Will add player suggestions to the list

If you're not quite sure what I'm getting at, just look at all his goals in just the past season -- to get what I'm getting at:

Gallagher is very good, he's a player i try to play like at forward lol

Another good example is a guy like ZAR, just a relentless puckhound, does not allow anything easily, is very very good at keeping pucks out of his zone and not allowing shots

For the Wild: Brodin's skating. It's unreal, he's so incredibly fluid on the ice but you never hear anything about it nationally. He's not necessarily a speedster, but his agility and edge work is incredible and his transition to skating backwards is sublime.

Here's a pretty good article by a Habs blogger on Brodin. It has Dumba in it as well, but the writer included some clips that really highlight Brodin's skating.

so basically a guy who goes to the dirty areas and gets rewarded is now Je ne sais quoi?

I mean I hate to break it to you, but there are whole histories of guys who have done it.
His problem will be that eventually the beating will wear on him, he'll deal with injury and decline. Like usually happens with those kinds of players.

But to answer your question, I think Brandon Tanev is one of those under rated guys with underrated qualities.
People laughed at his contract this year. His career high is 14 goals. But his impact on the ice is far greater. It's beyond just physical play, checking, defensive play. It's the fact he will go through a wall.
Draw penalties. Put teams on heels with speed. And in general be disruptive in ways that far exceed his offensive output.

I don't think there are a lot of guys like that in the league. I would classify Tom Wilson as one as well but he knows how to find the net consistently. But his play is much more than finding the net.

casey cizikas is super relentless on the puck, hes a good skater, has a quick (not necasarily hard) shot and checks and brings the isles energy like ive never seen. best 4th liner in the league IMO

I didn't mean specific to Gallagher's game, but rather any kind of player with a unique style of play when compared to his peers.

This is pretty much exactly why everybody and their second cousin is trying to poach Josh Anderson at vultures-are-circling rates - and why we're therefore getting an endless procession of "he's not worth what you want for him" yet still get bombarded with proposals over and over and over and over and over.

Jesper Fast goes balls to the wall every night, blocking shots and hitting everyone. I remember one night taking a beating from Washington, and he buried Tom Wilson into the boards. The garden went nuts. As humble and team-oriented as it gets. Played RW with Strome and Breadman second half of the season and rounded out that line perfectly. Had enough skill to roll with them and was a key cog in the line that created space and wreaked havoc on the forecheck. I hope he stays with NYR but whoever gets him is getting a top nine winger who does it all and doesn't complain.
Pretty overlooked guy IMO. Even if he'll only get you 20-30 points

I'd go with Foligno over Brodin for MN. Foligno isn't great at anything (NHL average at best for skills), yet he makes everyone who plays with him better.

I wasn't thinking that we had to pick one specific player, just wanted to shine light on Brodin's skating.

But I agree, Foligno does have that ability.
