do you need to have 23 people on the roster or can you have under?

I am not 100% sure, but I think you do. Also, you kind of have to, because you always have players that are banged up and miss 1-2 games and cannot be put on LTIR

You do not, when the leafs had a fully healthy roster this season they only had enough cap space for 22 members. However it is rarely a good idea to have less than 23 though, if you are on a road trip and a member of your team gets a suspension and another gets hurt you are playing with a shortened bench. Also most teams AHL affiliates aren't located close to their man NHL home location so constantly flying someone back and forth is costly and takes up a lot of time

Huge no from oilers. Larsson is the oilers top pairing d not moving him for someone that is iffy on making the oilers top six.

20 is the bare minimum, but far from the most efficient option as it creates various practical challenges for the team.

23 man roster should be the one teams are looking for.

Big no on that on year of Larsson for Kapanen. You've got one year of Larsson and Rosen, instead of Kapanen and Dermot for the same cap. More RHD obsession.
21 man rosters can't work due to short term injuries. 22 is OK.

I think I'd prefer to sell Kap for picks and aim for a UFA RD like Tanev or Brodie than take Larsson for one year.
You could look at it as trading Kap for futures + one of those UFAs (that would then come with more term) if you want, it would make more sense IMO

Fans now days rely on all these advanced stats too much. What ever happened to just watching a guy play. A lot of NHL insiders said that the second half of this season was some of the best hockey that Larsson has played in years! For RHD who do the leafs have that is better?.....that’s right you don’t!!

Adorable, i love how eye tests only matter when it's one you agree with. I mean, i literally mentioned how i watched him play and that i saw how he wasnt good.
I dunno how your brain works but when i see something and then the numbers also back it up, i think that's more true than someone who sees something and then the numbers say they are wrong.
I also love the "well the leafs dont have a better RHD!"
bit, but clearly you havent watched the leafs because they have 3
I know because i watched the games, and by your own logic you cannot defeat my watching the games!

Leafs fans are so delusional. Professional NHL insiders disagree with you but hey since you live in the centre of the universe then you must be right? I guess since your team has done nothing for 53 years you have become bitter against everyone else. Have fun cheering for the embarrassment of Canada!!

Emergency Recalls deals with that situation.

If the Leafs were entirely healthy this season they were only going to be able carry 20 - that has been true all season. That was something they had put planning into with the signing of the Marner contract. Other teams have done so for short periods of time. The Leafs will potentially have to do so next year. It wouldn't surprise me if multiple teams end up doing so in the coming years with the flat cap. Relying on emergency recalls is not ideal. Nor is having an inferior lineup so that you can carry more than 20.

In fact early in the season they were one game away from having everyone healthy and not only were they only going to be able to carry 20, but in order to even get the 20 to fit they were going to have to send down a player making just under 1M for one that was making league minimum. Later in the season they could only carry more than 20 because Johnsson was out for the season - if he had miraculously came back they would have hard time even getting 20 to fit under the cap.

21 player rosters can certainly work. 20 player rosters can also work.

oh please, stop the pity party. You tried to start something with your "watch the games" crap, and when that got turned around on you you tried the "bloo bloo leafs fans are dumb durrr" crap because you cant back up your own points or defend your own beliefs. You wanna talk hockey then talk hockey and dont just throw out kindergarten chirps because you cant actually talk hockey.
