Was about to say. Was Nylander a top 5 pick himself? How about Batherson, Thomson and NYI 1st?

Good offer. Don’t think Toronto is really in a spot that they want to trade Nylander for futures. I truly believe that if they trade hIm, it will be for a top RHD.

Agreed, I feel like that offer would be a last resort type deal where they couldn't find an immediate impact player. Thomson isn't that far out from being NHL ready, to be honest and Batherson already has his feet wet. That NYI first could end up being a Jake Sanderson. Who knows really...

It's just how many teams are in a position to do part with a top RHD that is on a team(leaf) friendly deal? Minnesota maybe with Dumba? Buffalo with Montour/Miller/Ristolainen? I'm spit balling here but you get my point. Leafs would probably be better off trading Johnson or Kerfoot for someone who can slot in top 4.

The Leafs have been lacking a top 4 RD for many years...could this be the year that Dubas trades a good forward for a good dman?!?!?!

Absolutely not for Subban. That's a rebuild ruining move. Unless they include a first, and retain so Ottawa can flip him. Even then, I wouldn't even want the paper trail lol

I would love a Player like Parayko or Pesce on this team. I’ve never really liked Nylander. I’ve liked his services, but I wouldn’t cry if he left.

That is a terrible offer for Nylander. The value is not even close. Nylander is one of the few better Leafs on a good contract. He is not going anywhere

Also, bad offer for Subban. Ottawa would never make that offer. No one wants that player at 9m for 2 seasons.

Yeah, both of those guys would look good on the Leafs, but don't see a reason why either the Blues or Canes would move either one.

I kinda like the subban trade. For Ottawa it actually could accomplish several things at once.
Subban is an excellent guy to have around the team for marketing purposes. He is fantastic at handling the spotlight and media which is very good for a team that has a lot of youth. He’s terrific in the community as well. If it doesn’t work out it’s short term and even shorter considering I really believe Seattle would have a lot of interest in him for those marketing purposes. I think that’s a very smart trade and I don’t see the owner stepping in and saying no because it is a lot of money but overall being offset by a bunch of ELC deals making the team.

Doubt if Ottawa would trade three picks for four years of Nylander, and still finish out of the playoffs. Sens would be better picking up 7m in contract(s) this year.....there will lots available and keep their picks.
Leaf would only do that type. of deal if they need the cap to sign a Dman.

I understand that reply but Toronto is going to feel some cap crunch this off-season and the ONLY THING keeping them from a trip to the finals is a legit RHD that they can't afford. Swapping Thomson for one of the 2nd rounders gives the trade a bump for TOR and clears enough cap for them to go after a solid top2/top4 RHD that can step in right away OR they could turn around and use the NYI 1st and OTT 2nd to go acquire a RHD from LAK or TBL or STL. I understand wanting to keep Nylander, but you have loads of offensive talent and if giving up Nylander lets you get a RHD that gets you to the Cup it seems like a no-brainer.

It's pretty common for teams to spread what would be their most talented line over their top TWO lines. It forces the opposition to pick their poison because they can't play their top D pairing against both lines. But I'm guessing you already know this... you're just chirping in a way that makes it look like you have less knowledge, which is odd.

I would for sure do this trade. Getting Zaitsev off the books is worth the possible nightmare that Subban brings to the room, especially since we could easily move him again by retaining some of his salary. And as @Timmah007 points out, we could nudge Seattle towards taking him by throwing in a pick. I'm all over this deal. Truly.

I agree we need another RD that can play in the top 4 for 1 or 2 years and be a good presence for the team. Doesnt really matter about cap hit cause we have so much space guys. Trading for a guy like PK or Anton Stralmon. Could even chase a free agent with a one or two year deal that gives him more money then other palces would like Justin Schultz, Shatinkirk or Bogosian

I thought Zaitsev had 3 years left under contract but it's actually 4. That means NJD would be spending the same money but spreading it out over 4 years instead of 2. While that helps with cap right now (which isn't an issue for New Jersey) it actually hurts them in years 3 & 4 of Zaitsev's deal and they're stuck with Zaitsev for 2 years longer than they would be Subban. We might actually need to add something more to this deal - nothing shocking, maybe just retaining a little on Zaitsev? 1.5M?

I dont think retianing salary on anyone is smart move with how much cap spcae we have lets not screw it for the future, worst case attach a pick to him in the expansion draft and get nothing back in return
