They’re just gonna give him a blank cheque. If he takes less, okay, if he takes more, okay. Dude can have whatever he wants

Flat salary cap means we'll see a lot of short term deals at lower than expected prices.

The great mind of Dubas has already admitted that he made a miscalculation with his signing and now he's scrambling.

It would be insane for Colorado to acquire a cap dump taking almost $5m of capspace in 2021/22 right in the middle of the cup contending window. Landeskog will likely get closer to $8m, Burakovsky will get more term and closer to $5m. Timmins will get at least double what you've given him.

These are things teams do to extend their window. Picking knits with Landeskog, I think he’ll be around 7.5 with the flat cap. Avs want to go short term on Bura right now, and there’s a world where Timmins hasn’t played another NHL game when he signs his next contract. Avs are one of very few teams that can take a cap dump, and if they don’t want to use that money elsewhere then why not.

I agree, and that’s why I know avs have changed position from wanting to sign Burakovsky long term to a short deal. Makar is the exception to this. I could see Landeskog doing a shorter term deal if necessary because of the flat cap because he has such a good relationship with the team

I don't doubt that Sakic may consider taking on a cap dump to add an extra asset, he has after all weaponised capspace in each of the last two offseasons in the Grubauer and Barrie trades.

However, cap space will be at a premium in 2021-22 onwards (unlike 2020-21 when we should have some extra space), so I think Sakic would only consider options with 1 year remaining (eg. Smith from NYR who could be a 7D for a year), rather than 2 years, unless the cap hit is small enough to not really be overly significant (eg. Komarov).

You sound very certain of that. Do you have a source on that, or what makes you so certain that they're leaning towards a short-term deal? I would have thought that Sakic would be more keen to lock Burakovsky in with some term, as his contract should be much more manageable now after only 1 good season (a shortened season too), compared to if he needs another contract after 2-3 seasons producing at the level he is now. If we extend him now he's probably looking at $4.75m - $5m on a 4 year deal, but if we sign him for 1 year only and he goes onto have another season with 60+ point pace then we'd be looking at over $6m.

It was aj heafles argument on a DNVR podcast.. says what do you risk by signing him to a shorter term less money deal now than a 4-5 year more money deal.. the obvious answer is walking him to UFA and losing him for nothing, but if his arguement if he likes it in denver he'll resign there in UFA... bad arguement bad decision

Walking him straight to UFA would be a good way to reduce the teams leverage. Personally I'd much rather bet on him keeping up his play at a reasonable cap hit, than risking having to pay over the odds for him as an UFA the same offseason we have to resign Landeskog and Makar.

I think the AJ haefele guy is out of his element with hockey, hes a former baseball guy.. and the other guy in the podcast just agrees with him and takes his opinion as gospel
