My first instinct is to play hardball, but I could do a 2021 3rd.

Exactly what we need imo. Good depth up top. This would be a good start to the offseason. If we can figure out the goaltending. Get a defensive rd. This team would be for sure in the playoffs and who knows when they get there.

I have a feeling Greiss is a lock to be added. I also have a feeling all this rest and retraining will do wonders for Joner.

I could add Gambrell to the trade, but I would want a 2020 6th coming back.

That way TOR: sheds $6.7M in cap, gets back a 2020 1st, has two cheap depth guys they can play immediately, and gets two RHD prospects and a decent goalie prospect.

I like both Kapanen and Johnsson, and given the Leafs' impending cap troubles I can at least see them moving one of the two. Value wise, I think it's close (maybe a bit in favor of SJS) but I'd be ok with paying even a little more for both of them. The problem is that they're both on very team friendly contracts which will inevitably raise their value.

To be honest though, I think you could probably move Labanc as well. Like I get that he's not a bad 3rd line option, but if we pick up Kapanen, I'd rather not keep Labanc because that's money I'd rather spend on a short term player like Marleau. Thant way in 2021-22, we can let Jumbo/Marleau/Sorensen go to FA and have guys like Gregor/Blichfeld.Chmelevski take their spots once they're ready. I'd be fine not acquiring Kapanen and keeping Labanc too. I'd just rather do one and not the other if you catch my drift.

The problem with that approach is that we have very few top or middle-6 RW options, so we have to do everything we can to keep adding quality depth to that wing. We need to be able to fall back on solid, point producing wingers, that way we can offer a supportive buffer for those rookies we're giving NHL time to rather than relying on them to overachieve. Having Kapanen and Labanc in the middle-6 is exactly the type of RW depth we need to be successful, so if it can be done I say it should be.

I feel like we need to return to being as deep as possible. Shannon, The Hockey Guy, despite being a little dire about the Sharks did make a good point about our depth. He said if anyone one the current roster suffered an injury we would be severely weakened. Because injuries are inevitable, we need a team deep enough to mitigate that.

Yeah I agree. I actually watched that video too (and while was mildly depressing), I definitely have to agree. I just don't understand how we could afford to roll with this roster from a monetary standpoint. Unless you were to also get rid of Burns, I think this might give us a lot of cap hell in the future.

I mean, don't the numbers above prove it's affordable?

I think 3 options. Ranta, Greiss and ullmark. I would feel great with any of those options.

With joner there too

I'm fine with any of those. I'd also add Talbot, DeSmith, Hill, and if at all possible, Khudobin to that list.

I say Greiss because we have a good history with him, he's a SOLID veteran in our price range, and Kevin Kurz has brought him up multiple times, which means he's hinting at some insider info.

I mean I'm not entirely sure I agree. Or maybe I'm just not following?

The team above underpays Labanc by 300k-800k, is $210,833 over the cap, and only has 22 men. So if you were to ideally have 3 healthy scratches on the roster, you'd be $1 million in the hole. And then if someone gets hurt, and they go on IR and you have to recall someone from the AHL, you're like $1.7 million in the hole.

I'd probably recommend having at least $1 million in cap space left for the unknown.

TBH, I have a feeling Labanc is gonna take another bridge deal for even less than that, but a $3.2/4yr contract is comparable to the value of what he produces (see Kapanen's contract above).
If we end up that close to the cap then we're probably gonna play a few 20-man roster games early in the season to reduce that exposure. There are ways to go over without incurring penalties. We could also re-sign Prout and immediately put him back on LTIR.

This is a prime example of quantity over quality going to Toronto. If I am Dubas I dont think twice, I decline immediately.

They get cheap, effective depth players (adding Gambrell), two RHD prospects, a prospect goalie and a 2020 1st. For a team that needs to shed $9M in cap space it's not the worst offer.

What is this hot garbage of a trade. This is Sorensen and a 1st for kapanen and Johnsson. None of those other players would make the leafs even with kappy and mango gone. They are a waste of contract space to the leafs. (This trade would put them more ver the league max)

The biggest problem is that the trade makes Toronto worse. He first is late ands it’s the way not real trade chip. Both these players are moved a Dman capable of 20min+ has to be the return. Or the equivocal trade chips.

Yup I can see that. Being in completely different conferences it just doesn’t make sense.
