I wonder what happens now if he opts out of the play-in round and playoffs (if he is even allowed). Would he still make money for the 19-20 season?

EDIT: nvmd I dont think he can play even if he wanted to

I think I remember hearing players like him and Kaprizov are not eligible to take part in the Return To Play games (play-in rounds and the playoff games) due to when they signed

Since Ilya can't sign anything, but an ELC for his 1st contract...does this mean (similar to guys like Dominik Kubalik) that now Ilya can sign a higher contract immediately without having to actually play a year?

Did they just burn a year of ELC on him.

I mean it's worth it if that's what it takes to get him to come over and play for them. But this does not help their cap situation.

Next contract 2.5Mx1?

This can only happen if they sign before the team gets eliminated, and were on the reserve list at the trade deadline. And only if the player is 24 or older. The only example of another KHL player that I can think of is Nikita Gusev, who signed a 1 year ELC with Vegas after his KHL season and remained a healthy scratch for the rest of the playoffs. Then he becomes an RFA on July 1st without playing a game.

So basically this is only happens for 24+ year old KHL players that are prospects on teams that go deep into the playoffs. That last part is the only thing that doesn’t apply to Sorokin, but that’s since 2020 is obviously no ordinary year.

Edit: And it’s only KHL players, since they’re usually the only ones who teams keep the rights to past age 23, which is a result of the lack of a player transfer agreement between the leagues.

I’m extremely interested in what happens with his next contract. On one hand he’s young and he was a top goalie in the 2nd best league in the world, so he could command quite a bit of money. on the other hand, he’s never played an NHL game, and they don’t know how he’ll adjust.

I figured something fishy was going on... I could smell it a mile away. Look for the KHL SWARM!!!
