Description
Buying out Gourde would cost Tampa $17.6m spread across 10 seasons, with the annual cap hit being between $1.67m and $2.7m. Retaining $1m would cost them a total of $5m ($12.6m less than a buyout) and only $1m against the cap for only 5 years. As such a trade with some retention would be much better than a buyout.

Even with retention it shouldn't cost Colorado much (if anything at all) to acquire him, given that Gourde has a full NTC until 2023 and can have full autonomy on where he ends up. If Gourde hears that a contender like Colorado want to acquire him and give him a top 6 role, he could easily just block trades to every other team, and thereby make the price for Colorado effectively a cap dump.

From Colorado's perspective they would be getting a versatile two-way 2nd line forward who goes hard to the front of the net which would work well with two shooters in Burakovsky and Kadri. At $4.16m AAV his contract would be manageable, particularly as his NTC becomes a 22 team trade list in 2023 when Mackinnon needs to be resigned, thus making him easier to move at that stage if needed. It's undoubtedly a risk though as he'll be 31 at that stage, and if he has some sub-par seasons before then he could become an anchor; but it might be worth the risk if he rediscovers his best form.

What are your main reservations (other than his contract)?

Note that I'm not really pushing this idea, just curious to gauge interest and trade value and whether or not it could be a viable option at all.

terrible contract and with a NTC, dont make life harder on yoruself having 3rd line players with NTCs for a team that needs to manage the cap carefully in the next couple seasons

Tampa declines quickly. Gourde is worth much more than a 7th, and Tampa would not be retaining one million on top. He also has far from a terrible contract and would easily contend for a 2nd line role on some teams. His usage was cut by a fair amount here but when given a larger role(albeit in a small sample size), he produced 11 points in 16 games before the pause. Despite the first half of this season, he is a player who has averaged just under .6 ppg and is a very solid 2 way player. He has averaged around 48 points a year these past nearly 3 seasons, and at 5.1667 a year is not overpaid for what he brings. Since he has the one extra year before his m-ntc kicks in, it is likely that Tampa elevates his ice time next year and then either trades him after a 50 or so point season or works out something with Seattle. Johnson is the likely trade candidate this offseason of the guys with the ntc due to his lessened role but still having better control over where he goes now before a 20 team trade list kicks in after next year.

In a vacuum it's not a terrible contract, but in the context of a flat cap league and Tampa's cap squeeze it's a contract that many consider to be worth buying out. It's also not an attractive contract due to his age and the term, which reduces the number of teams that can acquire him.

Tampa could certainly keep him, but it would require them to move Killorn along with probably one of Cirelli/Sergachev/Cernak.

They will move Killorn, Paquette, Johnson and likely Coburn(either through trade or buy out) this off season. The 3 rfa's are part of the future in Tampa, and the only one that has even a slim chance of leaving is Cernak but even that is doubtful. In any case, Tampa would not be retaining on Gourde and only getting a 7th back. Colorado can try and fleece someone else.
