Great signing.

This increases the canadiens chance against the Pens.

It's going to be a fun series!

Interesting. Honestly I think delaying his ELC until 20-21 would've been the better option, but I guess this gets his feet wet before his rookie season

Unfortunately from what I've read, he's ineligible to play this year.
The signing is more to be able to keep him around the team and practice w/ them.

Sucks to burn year 1 of his ELC, but during the pandemic it was the best decision to keep him around high level professional hockey

The thought process seems to be changing on that... Romanov is less likely to sign a big contract at the end of his two full seasons on an ELC - as oppose to postponing it, and him maybe signing a bigger contract three seasons from now.
Plus, it arguably favours Romanov short term (and perhaps make him grateful to the organization), to access a larger contract soon and perhaps banking in more money over his career.
Also, he can be around the club now, so we can see him on North American ice and practice to get ready for 2020-2021.
I think, we're going to see a lot more teams considering burning an ELC as quickly s possible for hopefully more favourable contract negotiations in the future

He can practise with the team and get to know some guys. Plus, we Habs fans are no longer biting our fingernails hoping for him to sign. I think that’s worth burning a year on his ELC.

For all the people getting mad about the year burned, please stop. That’s what happens with your top prospects, you give them the shortest ELC you can. And it’s most likely that he either takes a bridge, or gets less than he would have had he signed in a month. And he’s a 10.2c, so he won’t have as much bargaining power as RFAs.

Anyways, I cannot wait to see this guy in a habs jersey. He’ll be an important part of this team for a long time.

The reason it burns a year is he’s over 20 which means he’s not eligible for an entry level slide.

The burned year is effectively a big signing bonus for Romanov, helps convince him to sign up now!

I'm kind of surprised Montreal even signed this kid ?

Based on everything I've seen and read about him, he's a huge bust.

Kotkaniemi, Caufield and Poehling look like they're on the same track.

Olofsson, Ylonen, Struble, Ikonen and Brook didn't even board the train.

So much for 3 first's and five second's. The future looks grim in Montreal.

My point is usually when a player signs for any given year, he is illegible to play that year! For example he signs for the 2019-20 season he can play, otherwise is contract should start for the 2020-21 season

The nhl made a point of saying that prospects who signed like that wouldn’t be allowed to play this year. Idk why but they said those players wouldn’t be allowed to play

Don't know about the new CBA but the last one previous to the stoppage had the trade deadline at 3pm as the unofficial deadline for being playoff eligible in the org. (Loophole is if you were drafted by that team and NOT in a pro league you're still eligible)

I can tell you’re a Leafs fan. Here we go:
Liljegren fell all the way to seventeen for a reason. It’s hard to believe he will ever be above the third pairing
Sandin is an offensive defenceman, so he will be buried under Rielly and Barrie for years to come
All Robertson can do is score, which is exactly what they don’t need since they have Matthews, Marner and Tavares. He’s going to go on the same track as Bracco
Woll has nowhere to go since Andersen will be a Leaf until he is forty
All the rest of the Leafs’ prospects are probably not even going to be signed
They have like four draft picks in the next three drafts
The future looks even grimmer in Toronto

My man - your sarcasm detector is non existent.

Romanov was obviously a great pick at 38.
Sandin was obviously a great pick at 29.

Robertson is a few days older than Lafreniere (and he was born 2 months premature).
Eric Lindros is the last CHL player to top Robertson's goals per game marker as a teen.
He's short but he plays a hard nosed game (he's also a beast - check his workouts on IG).
It's a bit early to make predictions (Robertson + Caulfield had fairly comparable seasons).

I don't think the Leafs can afford to re-sign Barrie (unless he takes $5,000,000 or less).
But Toronto does do have 10 picks in the upcoming draft and 6 in the next one.
They're just missing one 1st round pick and two 3rd round picks.

- Joseph Woll doesn't seem like he's that great of a goalie prospect to be honest.
- Abruzzese (C) is a good one (1.42 points per game in the NCAA at 20 years old).
- Abramov (C) is a good one (1.22 points per game in the QMJHL at 18 years old).
- Kokkonen (D) is a good one (0.35 points per game in the LIIGA at 18 years old).
- Fillip Krall (D) is a good one (0.93 points per game in the WHL at 19 years old).
