Yeah. Probably Cholo instead of Hicketts and 2nd instead of 3rd.

Vancouver and St. Louis would not make those trades. Value is just not there.

Try one of your top D prospects? Hronek or Seider

I don't think they'd move Seider. Hronek or Cholowski maybe.

Hronek isn’t a prospect anymore he’s played 111 games and is definitely a top 4 fixture. Seider is going to be pretty untouchable especially for a winger with a cap dump attached.

We’d add Cholowski but not Hronek as they have completely different values.

Yeah that's not happening with Eriksson attached, Moving Boeser to alleviate Eriksson lessens his value. If we were to draft Drysdale Hronek 1 for 1 for Boeser might work

You expect way too much for taking Allen (who will cost about a 3rd) with Steen (who should get you about a 2nd to take), and we have no use for Svech. Try a new offer idea.

I have realised that Detroit proposals are pointless. Other team's fanbases have not yet come to terms with how much taking on cap will cost.

Why did Marleau fetch a first with 6.25M and Steen with 5.75M would be a single second rounder? Considering it would require multiple second rounders to get a first rounder especially considering STL’s will be late. Just trying to understand the thought process of valuing cap dumps.

Trade was made with stipulation that the Canes would pay to buy him out. Hence the higher price.

So you believe he’d waive his NTC to play on a bottom feeder considering they’re the only ones that have the cap? He’d probably only waive for a buyout to then sign for cheap with a contender. I’d also wager teams don’t love the idea of 5.75M 4th liner for a late second rounder. They’d much rather use that space to get quality futures or bargains in FA.

Oh, I never said he'd waive (or that Detroit would do this, for that matter). I've repeatedly commented on such trades that Steen would only waive for a few certain places, and Detroit/Ottawa/Buffalo/etc. ain't among them. But even if he wants a buyout, there's a difference between the team making a trade with that as a condition and a team not including such a demand.

Well considering the only teams with the available cap space are bottom feeder (minus Colorado) then they’d have that same stipulation Marleau had hence requiring the first to be the compensation. It doesn’t matter if the team asks the other team for the buyout since he has a full NTC until February 2021 he has all of the leverage. If he wants to stay then he can unless he is bought out or waives. Steen is about as close of example to Marleau you will find considering that cap space will be allocated to Pietrangelo, Dunn, etc.

Is Svechnikov still a prospect of consequence? I thought his star had faded in which case yeah that's too expensive for the Blues.
If he is supposed to still pop off that could be interesting but the Blues already have a former late 1st high upside, almost made the NHL but hasn't materialized into NHL production prospect in Kostin but it's still interesting.
If not Steen only maybe costs that 1st, probably only costs a 2nd unless a 4th or maybe 3rd or higher is sent back. Allen has value and probably brings back somewhere between a 2nd and a 4th round pick depending on how much a team values him.

IMO moving Steen would be more like the Backes or Orpik trades. Backes + Axel Andersson + 1st got them Kase and that was 1.5 yrs remaining on Backes. Orpik + 2nd got them Grubauer - that was 1 yr of Orpik, whom COL promptly bought out. Marleau's buyout cost a full 6.25m against the cap as an age 35+ contract. Steen's would only cost 3.4m and that's if a team chooses to buy him out at all.

If Steen waives his NTC, attaching a 1st round pick to him should still bring back some sort of value to STL, maybe something like a 2nd round pick or a decent young NHLer.

The Anaheim deal was definitely a shock to most and I think everyone knew Boston won that deal the day it was announced. That deal was also made pre-stagnant cap for years so it’s looking even more lopsided. It was also different as they didn’t have to move Backes to sign studs to raises like Carlson & Wilson in Washington or Marner in Toronto. Grubauer at the time had a few season and career average of like .925% SV and would’ve easily garnered a first (using Lehner as comp). I’d have no problem giving a 2021 3rd but considering our second round pick and STL’s first will only be a couple selections apart that doesn’t make any sense. You also have to remember that GMs we’re making deals with the assumption of a rising cap so cap space is going to be more scarce than when these deals went down so it will be interesting to see what teams do to maneuver in this new scenario.

For sure, the gap between STL 1st and DET 2nd in 2020 wouldn't be enough. But somewhere around a 20-30 spot drop out of the 1st round would be what I'd expect if Steen were to get traded for fair value - I still think it's either he plays for STL or is bought out by STL - no reason for him to waive his NTC especially if it is just to be bought out somewhere else.

That could be arranged also if in the 2020 draft. We have both the Edmonton & Washington second rounders which should be in the 45-60 range for your 2020 1st + Steen with or without the condition of Detroit buying him out (I’m sure he’d prefer the buyout so he can freely sign with a contender). Detroit could bear the 3.5M hit the first and 1M the next as we don’t have any large raises the next couple years.

true but STL can't just eat that 3.4M if they want to keep Dunn and Pietrangelo, there is value to dumping him and if he's being bought out he's being bought out. that said flat cap or not I agree that a 1st is too much
