Huh?????
2 top 4 D-Men, arguably a top pair in itself.

You would have trade Matthews for this, and if you hadn’t had Tavares in the team and Nylander could not have played the cente? High picks? Late firsts in 21 and 22, this does not move the needle at all. Buffalo easily declines.

You can have him then he will be turning 30 and be demanding something like 15 x 7. The first couple of years will be great for you the last several will be rough as he is declining and taking up a huge chunk of your cap

Get real Torey Krug isn't signing with Buffalo. Any Eichel deal starts with Charlie McAvoy as the main piece. Not even freaking close.

Guess we'll find out when he becomes a UFA. Maybe the cap ceiling is $100 million. At $15 mill he'd be 15% of the cap which is a slight increase from his CH% now.

Depends on how he takes care of himself. Some players get better with age and some don't. Good news is he won't have much wear and tear from playoffs games and that alone could be worth an extra season to his career.

Of course the level.of the cap will dictate what players end up getting paid on AAV. The point is when elite players become UFA around 30 they sign long term deals based upon their past performance not on the future outlook at thus end up being overpaid for their performance level. IE Getzlaf, Seabrook, Zetterberg, Parise, first few years are ok alot of times but the last few tend to be painful

I mean just looking at the Bruins, Patrice Bergeron right away comes to mind, he's 34yr old. Hell Zdeno Chara finished 2nd in Norris voting at 36yrs old.

I'd say the first 5 years of Getz contract was fine as he' was nearly a P/GP player. The last two years have been a bit rough, but he's still playing at a 55pt pace on a trash team. Zet in his first 5 years of his big contract was playing at a 80pt pace and even when he declined in his last 4 years he played at a 60pt pace while having a $6 million cap hit (not bad at all). Parise was just never the same since going to MIN. Seabrook's career production before his big contract was around 0.43 P/GP. his first 3 years he was around 0.39 P/GP (not a huge drop) and it wasn't until this year that he just fell off.

Zdeno Chara was a Norris candidate every year from his late 20's to early 30's and was good for 50npoints a year in a much less offensive league. No doubt he stayed productive later in his career than most do but he has not been on the same level he was 10 - 15 years ago. Bergeron has been largely the same player he was since his mid 20's no better. Only difference is it has been 3 years since he has played over 65 games after being good for 80 games per year just about every year prior

All of this production has dropped off while at the same time in the league scoring has gone up by 12 % over the last 4 years. Players numbers should be higher than their career averages by a similar margin to say they are the same as they were earlier in their careers. Look at where these players rank among their peers earlier in their career as opposed to now. A 70 point season in 14 - 15 meant you were among the top producers in the game as only 19 players reached that production. Jordie Benn led the league with 87 points that year. Fast forward to last year 55 players reached 70 points while 18 were at 87 points or higher which would have led the league just a few years earlier. I left out this year not being a full season but points per game #'s among league leaders were at last years pace including 17 players at 70 + points with 10 games remaining still

And even though Bergeron is playing less games he's still manage the same, if not more points lol. In fact over the last 3 years he's been over a P/GP player, while the 3 years prior to that he was around 0.73 P/GP.

Look you can play mental gymnastics all you want to make yourself feel better about Eichel leaving when his contract is up, but there is plenty of guys that are still productive in their 30's.

maybe by the time eichel is 30 he has made enough money that he says screw it ill sign a cheaper contract for a chance to win some championships... thats 6-7 years down the road. we have no idea what happens in that time frame.

He also was a point per game player when he was 20 and 21 in 05-06 and 06 - 07. Then scoring went down in the league and so did his. The last few years when scoring has spiked so has his. He has been basically the same player throughout his career and that is a credit to him for being able to maintain that. This is more of an exception to the rule than the norm. I don't think you are being honest with yourself if you expect the next few years of his career to go as well as the last few have. He may end up being an anomaly as anything is possible but more than likely his game will steadily decline over the next few years.

It is not mental gymnastics. It is statistical analysis and trends. This is not about making me feel better about this team they have been terrible for a decade and I am not trying to kid myself about what this team has been. Things will progress likely on one of two ways this team will continue to struggle or have marginal success over the next several years at this point most Sabres fans including myself will understand letting Jack walk as we cannot justify what his contract demands will be as a player in his 30's on a bad team. Or the Sabres will get good at which point the Sabres are an attractive team for him to stay with and chase championships. At this point maybe he takes shorter term and less AAV to be able to compete for a few more years on a contending team in Buffalo. If he wants to maximize his contract the Sabres can offer him the 8th year and would be likely willing to make that commitment to chase championships for a few more years knowing the last few years of the deal may not be pretty, but they can justify this as a thank you for helping to make a perennial bottom feeder a contender and also extending their championship window

he also sustained a near career ending concussion early into the 2007-2008 season and it took him sometime to get back to normal (thus the dip in production).
