What if -- Markstrom walks

Description
Let me start by saying I think Markstrom is the Canucks top UFA priority this offseason. But VAN is in a well known cap crunch and it's not impossible that he takes another team's larger offer in free agency. So this ACGM explores what the team could do if that happens.

1) Baertschi and the team mutually terminate his contract -- Not sure if Sven would want to do this as he'd be walking away from 2.4M cash for this season, but I think he's actually a prime candidate. He played well in the limited NHL games he was in and proved he was healthy and effective by dominating the AHL games he played. At 27 he's definitely young enough for other teams to want to take a chance and give him a cheap one year prove-it deal. If he's confident that he belongs in the big league still (and I think he does) then I could see him betting on himself and doing this, as opposed to wasting another season of his career in the AHL.

2) Sign the RFA's and some of the cheaper team UFA's for depth. Bring in a replacement top-4 Dman for Tanev (hopefully DeMelo) and sign a quality 1B-type goalie to a 1 year deal that can platoon with Demko.

If Markstrom walks, you sign Talbot, Greiss or Khudobin for 1 year. That way cap is still gone after next year to re-sign your players

Not sure I understand the DeMelo signing on this, but one of Lehner or the other goalies mentioned for a short term would be some salvation.

Lehner isn’t signing another short term deal. And no UFA goalie is signing long term with VAN bc of Demko being looked at as their future in goal

Is Demko not ready? I'd think you sign a true backup goalie and go with the young guy. If he is your future guy, gotta go with him. He'll be 25 by the time the new season starts. Its either showtime now or maybe the Nucks need to rethink whose gonna be in the crease in the coming years, now.

I love Demko, but no, he's very close but not ready for a starting job. For the most part he's a wall, but he has a bad habit of letting in one clumsy goal a night. I don't think it's time to move on from Demko, he will be an NHL goaltender, but ideally I think Canucks would lock up Markstrom long term and Demko gets taken by Seattle.

I don't see the Canucks being players for any of the true starter UFA's other than if Markstrom decides to take slightly less to stay in Van. But considering there's only a handful of teams that will be looking give out big contracts to those guys it would leave the second tier of good backups for teams like VAN.

Why does the DeMelo signing confuse you? I see him as a perfect fit with the Canucks; he's a younger, RHD with good possession stats that played a top 4 role last year. If they got him signed to this deal it would likely be cheaper than re-signing Tanev, who has already left his prime.

With limited cap space the goalie position is one that they'll have to make a tough decision on this offseason. I believe they want Markstrom back, but there's only so much AAV that they'll be able to afford; hence the reason for this ACGM. If Markstrom does re-sign I definitely see the team using Demko as trade bait to try to get rid of one of their bad contracts. But if Marky leaves for more money I think the most likely path for the Canucks is to sign a good 2nd tier UFA (Talbot, Greiss, Khudobin, etc.) to a one year deal to split starts for the year. They won't just hand the starting role to Demko, but this would be the next phase of his development if they keep him.
