I could see the Bruins doing this to keep Krug, wouldn't actually be a bad idea.

If you want the LTIR contract you have to pay for it. Not the other way around.

Obviously you don't know how acquiring LTIR players work, Anaheim isn't giving up top picks Boston would.

Kesler for your 2020 second is about right. Isn't that the price you'd pay to keep Krug?

But they don't need to acquire someone to put them on LTIR to sign Krug either. Its weird because acquiring Kesler to put him on LTIR does nothing for Boston

You are aware the putting a player on the LTIR opens capspace, how do you think the leafs signed all those players.

Yeah, putting YOUR OWN player on LTIR clears up THEIR cap space

Ill do the math for you

Bruins trade for Kesler: -6875000 in cap space
Bruins palce Kesler on LTIR: +6875000 in cap space

NET CHANGE: 0000000000000

(ill even do the leafs to help you)
Leafs: Start: -15 million in cap space
Place Horton and 2 other guys on LIRT: +15.5 million in cap space

NET CHANGE: +15.5

New space: +.5 mil

You do know that there is talk of Kesler playing again right? He had surgery and was ruled out for '19-'20 but not '20-'21. He hasn't said he is done yet....

I think any team trading for that LTIR would need a definitive answer before making a deal regarding his future plans.

Plus, the fact that Boston would be competing with several other teams to grab LTIR contracts....most notably the Leafs

It really depends upon where they are in the cap situation. If they spend to 81.4M and add a LTIR contract in the offseason when the cap goes temporarily up 10% then put that player on LTIR they can replace that salary up to what the player makes minus the 0.1M cap space that wasn't used before they traded for a LTIR player.

For example. The Leafs currently have $4,591,467 in cap room next year having spent 76.908M (true statement). They have 16 under contract (true statement). They fill the roster the roster with 6 players at league minimum 750k (which is 4.5M total). Now they have 22 players under contract at 81.409M and 91.467k left in cap space. However the offseason rules allow the team to exceed the cap by 10%. That means 81.5+ (81.5*10%)= 89.65M to spend. The Leafs use this offseason cap to acquire Zetterberg's contract (6.083M) bringing their total cap dollars to 87.492M and having 23 players on the roster. The Leafs put Z on LTIR at the start of the season and now gain 5.992M =(87.492-81.5M) to spend on that 23rd player replacement....thereby allowing them to go over the salary cap by 5.992M.

Bro the cap is 81.5 reguardless, the only reason the leafs were under is because they played with less than the maximum for a few games and they had JUST enough space with Horton and Clarkson on the roster. Nobody is every allowed to go x amount over the cap

Yes, they are when LTIR player is replaced. That's how LTIR works bro.

Quote:
LTIR provides relief if the club's averaged club salary, or payroll, begins to exceed the upper limit. The amount of relief that the club receives is calculated on the day the player is placed on LTIR. There are three equations that are used to determine the LTIR relief, the first, the basic equation, can be used during the season and during the off-season. The second, the training-camp equation, can be used on the final day of the off-season in preparation for the first day of the season. The third formula is used when the team already has a player on LTIR.

Why do you think Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is trying to add another LTIR contract to pay money for no reason?

( @OldNYIfan ) I just read the entire page
and it explained basically what i said:

Space isnt just created. It literally says that they still must operate under the NHL salary cap. However, they are able to operate in between their New Cap (because they have a player on LTIR) and the salary cap.

Space isnt created using LTIR, its just freed up.
