LOL. You realize that every stats site calculates "expected goals" differently, right? And none of them actually have great correlation with actual goals? Don't tell me it's not subjective.

They have the best correlation with actual goals actually, look at any graph comparing the two side by side on a league level.

Do you know what the correlation is? I bet you don't.

What do you honestly expect to accomplish with such a foolish fallacious comment like that? Are you expecting me to be like "Oh yes you completely changed my mind!" Ofc I know what it is don't be so dense.

this list is fine except for Nurse and Toews. Nurse is a solid, big body defensemen. He's definitely not one of the worst defensive D's in the NHL. not a chance. Toews was literally hailed as the best defensive forward a few years ago. I get he fell off, but no one goes from the best two way centre in the league to one of the worst defensive forwards.

This one is just the worse players in xDef, but you see the same trends with any stat

I’m pretty sure the two worst players in EVD are Kane 1st and Connor 2nd, Scheifs was around 7th worst I’m pretty sure in terms of forwards. Kinda sad that Patrik Laine was the best defensive forward on that line this year lol. No wonder that line would get shelled every game. What a difference a couple years make. Scheifs was prob a top 5 C in the 17-18 season. I really don’t know how he still has a 2.4 WAR this year, just shows how lethal he is offensively

Yeah, I saw something with Michah's model where that line barely broke even this year... like holy sh*t you have 3 players viewed as elite talents, and you manage to be so bad defensively that you barely break even lol

The point was to correctly use metrics you look at how well they correlate not how subjectively they punish expected goals--are those the top defensive players in the league? or just the top xDef players? That's the point he keeps missing. Otherwise it's like using +/- to determine how much better the 4th liner on Tampa is at defense than the 1st liner on say Ottawa or Detroit and then saying the number prove it.

Anyone that says Toews is among the worst defensive players in the league doesn't watch hockey---and that is coming from someone that can't stand the Hawks.

You must be smarter than 3 veteran NHL coaches.

Over the past 3 years Nurse has played more minutes at 5v5 than any NHL player not named Drew Doughty. Meanwhile McDavid and Draisaitl are #2 and 3 among forwards respectively.

Clearly McLellan, Hitchcock and Tippett don't know as much as you.

How does this really relate, though? I have no comment right now on the defensive capabilities of those players, but the time on ice doesn't say much about their defensive play (specifically regarding McDavid and Drai). Their impact on the offensive side of the game coupled with the teams lack of depth up front over the last 3 years would cause me to question the intelligence and sanity of any coach who didn't play them a ton, regardless of any potential defensive deficiencies.

And, don't get me wrong, I get that player usage (whether it be toi, zone starts, qoc, etc.) is often an indicator of the skills/effectiveness of players in certain situations, whether that's only in the coaches eyes or reflected in the stats as well. But it just doesn't take a genius to play McDavid and Draisaitl a ****load and it doesn't require that they are strong defensive players to justify it.

I know... That's why I specified that I was talking about McDavid and Drai when mentioning the offensive impact.
