Pretty sure that Pilut has signed a 2 year deal to play in the KHL.

I'd say it's Hanifin's contract length that makes this stealish. In terms of short-term on-ice value. Hanifin and Miller aren't very far apart. Hanifin brings more offense, Miller brings more defense. I think the bigger issue is that the Sabres prospect pool is so trash that there's really no one they can send in this deal (because of the massive gap between Cozens and the next guy) that would make this work. So they'd have to send like a 2nd.

I think that Buffalontakes that trade but it is by no means a steal. Hanafin is a very similar player to Miller. He tends to get overrated because of where he was drafted. He had a very good year in 18-19, but the rest of his career he has been a below average 2nd pair defenseman without alot of physical abilities but not very good underlying numbers

I think Miller and Hanifin are close, but Hanifin gets the nod.
Buffalo and Calgary makes the trade to balance LHD and RHD.
If Pilut opt out of the KHL contract, this is actually a huge win for Calgary.
While Pilut was not given the chance to display his offensive talents in Buffalo, he won the Salming award and was an AHL All Star.
But good discussion thanks for your input, maybe both teams would say no.
Buffalo may want to trade Miller for a center.

Buffalo would definitely prefer to get a center back in a deal for Miller but he likely would only be a piece in that deal will take more than him to acquire the type of player they are looking for. Additionally I think the Sabres look to move Montour or Risto before Miller

Buffalo absolutely wins this trade.
Hanifin is the better player (not saying it’s a massive gap but he is definitely better)
Hanifin has the better Contract
Hanifin is the younger player

Hanifin has progressed every year in the league (minus last year which his defensive partner took a large step back)

Flames absolutely walk away from this trade

No Calgary just doesnt do it and its really not that close. Hanifin is 5 years younger and still has lots of potential. Miller is way past his development stage and wont get any better.

Hanafin has a higher cap number over 1 million AAV annually. That plays a large role in a flat cap league for the next couple of years. Obviously 2 additional years of term for Hanafin can be viewed as a benefit but with the level of player he is that cap hit seems like not a great value and thus the additional years create a strain on the cap. Pilut being added makes up any gap between the value of the two players. He definitely is in Calgarys top 6 if Hanafin moves out and would be able to be signed on a true value contract under 2 million AAV. If it makes the acquiring team more comfortable the Sabres can easily add a conditional pick that goes to the acquiring team if Pilut remains in the khl. I would be very surprised if he was not playing in the nhl next season.

I think everyone is looking at this as Miller for Hanifin and overlooking the upside of Pilut.
Last year, he was injured and was considered the 8th or 9th choice in the depth chart.
It is most unfortunate for the Sabres.
Pilut could be the wild card here, the Flames get 2 NHL defensemen for the price of one.
I really was unhappy when Pilut bolted to the KHL.

He has an NHL out in his contract. He signed with the KHL because he has no intentions of being buried in the AHL again. He can go to the KHL make more $$, get in great hockey shape and be ready for when the nhl returns in 2020-2021. Of the Sabres trade his rights to an organization that has a path for him to play and gives him a one way contract I have no doubt he will be in the NHL next year

I can't believe Miller and Hanifin are being compared like they are really close in value, but let's say they are and that Pilut opts out of the KHL and this becomes a huge "win" for the Flames because of it, now what do they do in the expansion draft? I assume Pilut is not exempt correct? If he and Miller are as good as people are saying then the Flames would certainly lose one in the expansion draft unless they left their captain unprotected, in which case they lose him and in the end the whole debacle is a loss for the Flames really.

OK, let's say they do not make the trade.
Who do they protect?
Giordano, Hanifin, Andersson or Brodie?
If Pilut can demonstrate his offensive skills in the NHL, then the Flames would have either one of them.

Brodie is a UFA.

The Flames as of right now will be protecting Giordano, Andersson and Hanifin.
