Description
This is crazy. I know. But the Red Wings have no player really worth paying big money for like two years or so.

Also, they do not really have a ton of prosepcts and a lot of cap space.

I think they could solve many salary cap problems for many teams. I have a hard time evaluating the value of eating cap for other teams. Maybe a bit optimistic in terms of value.

Also, good luck to Seattle picking a player

Lucic, Radulov and Ericsson have no motivation to waive their NTC to come to the Wings and certainly that asking price is too high.
There should be moderately priced veterans that teams will give to the Wings as these teams need cap.
As you suggest there is no reason for the Wings to go crazy on the UFA market this year....Cap will be King in the next few years, be patient the Wings will be OK.

Eriksson might waive if the Canucks refuse to put him in the NHL next year.

Maybe Radulov not so much. I agree on that. But I am not sure for Lucic and Eriksson. Those guy are not getting younger. If I were them, I'd rather play some years in Detroit with decent playing time than actually either play 4th line minutes or sitting in the press box, while also knowing that the only reason you are part of that team is because they cannot move you. Also, who know. Maybe they would even send them to the AHL.

I think with the cap situation, some teams would probably be quite happy to get some millions of the books for some years.

The Stars are in a bad cap situation, with mainly old players on their roster.

Also, the Canes and Vancouver could become contenders with some good moves. While the Habs struggle with Cap without even being good and might be forced to make some moves because of cap reasons they are not willing to make

There is no cap advantage sending a guy to the minors. Unless the 1m player that replaces Ericsson is better, it's a just spiteful thing to do that doesn't improve the team.

There’s a decent chance that they have players in the AHL better than Eriksson. And IDK if this is just the fans/media dreaming, but I’ve heard it thrown around that Vancouver might send him down just to spite him, whether to get him to accept a trade, or to make him want to terminate his contract. Not that I think it’s likely, but it might be possible, since Eriksson & Canucks management don’t have the best history of getting along.

I assume you mean the habs. This year we have tonnes of cap space, next year there’s a bit of a crunch, since we need to sign all of our UFAs. Although it isn’t that big of a deal, since if we buy him out he only counts $2 million against the cap next year. Worst case scenario we pay another team to take on a lower cap hit for a lower price next year.

I'm kinda doubting we are even going to have a regular 2020/21 season. I wouldn't be trading high picks for either short term cap relief or a rental player. Seems like Benning is trying to cover his butt for all his awful UFA signings over the years by threatening Ericsson with the minors.

That might be true. But in my opinion. The Red Wings are at least 2 seasons away form being anyway near being decent. Rather play established league veterans in the NHL and build a good team in Grand Rapids that is acutally getting used of winning.

Last season, the Red Wings were kind of half as good as all the other bad teams. In a shortend season, they had more than 20 points less than the 2nd worst team.

But to get rid of almost 9 million in cap? I think with the next 3 years with a flat cap, and one year with 9m cap space and another year with 6m cap space is valuable

Taking on two year cap dumps is fine but guys with 3 or more years left like Lucic shouldn't be touched by the Wings and if they did take Lucic they should ask for more then this, if one year of Marleau cost the Leafs a 1st then three years of Lucic should cost more then a 1st and 3rd.

I disagree with this idea though, the Wings should use their cap space on signing the or key RFA'S to long term deals and they should sign a few good UFA's, they have to be better next season, can't rebuild forever.

Canucks trade is good. I see Eriksson's contract worth a 1st+3rd/4th and adding Baertschi definitely makes it 1st+3rd. Reimer's contract isn't that bad and he's coming off a good season so I don't think Carolina is looking to dump him or at least not for that cost. Lucic trade is decent but I really don't want him. Alzner trade is good. Nemeth will be traded for a 3rd or a 4th. Radulov is actually good so don't think the Stars will trade him.

100% agree that we shouldn't look to take on contracts with more than 2 years. I do think that the Red Wings should look to take 1 or 2 cap dumps for futures to help the rebuild but nothing more than 2 years unless we get an offer we can't refuse. For UFA's we should sign some decent guys to 1 year deals so we can flip the at the TDL.

Do they have any RFAs worth signing long term other than Seidler and Zadina. I think both are like 2-3 years away and with what I did all cap dumps would be gone by then.

I agree with your evaluation of Radulov. What I was thinking was, that Dallas has not much Cap space, and guys like Heiskanen, Hintz and some more will be RFAs a season before the contract of Radulov ends.

yes. that is true. but they are this season. And I think 11m for both combined should do the job. I mean neither of them had a 50 point season so far and both are 25.

That's true with Bertuzzi and Mantha. However, this year Bertuzzi was on pace for 55 points, and Mantha was on pace for 72 points. I see Bertuzzi between 5-6 mil and Mantha between 6-7. 11 mil would be best case scenario but I'm guessing it will be at least 12 mil. As I said earlier, I hope the Red Wings take on 1-2 bad contracts that will be over within 2 years. I think we should save some cap to spend on UFA's that we can sign to 1 year deals so we won't be so awful and we can trade them at TDL for futures.

I am not a red wings fan so I do not really know everything about them, but when I compare them to the other teams right now, I just feel that they do not really have any depth in their organisation, also not prospect wise. I am a huge fan of Zeider and think Zadina will be very good, but other than that. Teams like Ottawa are just more likely to succeed in the next 2-3 years than Detroit, because they are some years ahead in the rebuild and the competiton in their divison is not that easy.

I think they will be horrible for about 2 more seasons before they can make real progress

Mantha, Bertuzzi should be signed long term, Fabbri to a bridge deal.

They should sign a dman or two to somewhat longer deals, like 3 or 4 years, a goalie to the same kind of deal, maybe a decent bottom 6 forward too if there's one worth signing but that's less of a priority.

I see what you mean, but I have a hard time seing the Red Wings ahead of Tampa, Boston, Toronto, Florida and even Buffalo in the next couple of years. So I just wonder if it is worth to put effort in signing guys to expensive deals (not very attractive place for FA at the moment) to finish around 20th or 21st or if you should just rather accept that you are bad and draft in the top 4 two more times.
