Don't think Edmonton gets return for Russell will probably need to pay someone to take that contract. Benning and Jujhar are league minimum type players and tons of UFA's that can fill those roles. Maybe get late round picks or can add them as pieces for larger trades but not going to get 2nd or even 4th round picks for them

All three of these trades are quickly declined. Soderberg is a good grab, but you don’t have the cap space after those trades are declined

A mid-2nd is about right for Matt Benning. He's a 25 year old RHD with an established track record at the NHL level. He's been consistently good every season, winning his 5v5 minutes on a team that generally hasn't. He has value at $2M.

5v5 GF% (relative to team)
2016-17: 56.76% (+5.03)
2017-18: 51.55% (+3.38)
2018-19: 55.84% (+12.22)
2019-20: 58.97% (+10.77)

His point production is good too, and steadily improving:

2016-17: 0.71 P/60
2017-18: 0.85
2018-19: 0.86
2019-20: 0.91

He would go in the top 40 in a re-draft, making him pretty decent value for Washington's 2nd round pick. You're probably overvaluing what that pick is worth; this quote might help:

The truth is that very few players taken in the NHL draft... will ever play in the NHL. In order to get an accurate read of how many drafted players played at least 200 games in the NHL, a study by proicehockey.about.com looked at the drafts between 1990 and 1999. Of the 2,600 hundred players drafted just 494 or 19% played in at least 200 contests. 63% of first round picks played but less than 25% of second round picks survived and only 12% of third rounder selections.

https://guelphstorm.com/odds-not-great-for-nhl-draft-picks

That late 2nd has very little chance of becoming the player Matt Benning is today.

Ok when you get a 2nd round pick for him remind me and I will agree with you but till he isn't worth a 2nd IMO.

Boston offered Heinen for Khaira at the deadline. I don't think a 4th is unreasonable.

Heinen was a cap dump. They were not looking for equal.value back that is why they were willing to move him for Ritchie otherwise they would have been over the cap. They were taking any 4th liner that they could plug into their lineup and had a low cap hit.

All that being said why on Earth would Edmonton trade this player. It seems like he is a great value contract that they are lucky to have

So a plug-and-play 4th liner who has a low cap hit and is one of the best PKers in the league* isn't worth a 4th round pick in your opinion? That's a really bad take on your part.

* among forwards who played at least 90 minutes at 4v5 this year (104 players qualify), Khaira was

- 6th in SA/60
- 1st in GA/60
- 12th in xGA/60
- 7th in HDCA/60

It is and they are. The only reason to trade him is to make room for Evan Bouchard, who is considered NHL ready.

Well by your logic it appears he is worth a second because a second round draft pick likely won't even amount to that much.

This isn't my AGM, but I'll give you my thoughts on the subject.

The only reason I would do it would be price. Benning's QO is $2M, there's some thought that Green could sign for less. Not sure if this is true, but he knows Holland and Edmonton gives him an opportunity to win again before retirement, so it is at least a plausible idea.

If Edmonton can save $500k to $1M on 3RD (and have Green platoon with Bouchard), that gives them some money to bolster another position AND it gets them another pick in the draft without losing much - if any - quality on the ice.

Pick values fluctuate during the year. They are highest leading up to the draft and lowest at the deadline. A smart GM takes advantage.

I don't think Khaira gets a 2nd leading up to the draft. At the deadline maybe (depending on how he's performing and how badly a team needs his skills), but we're not there right now.

- DeMelo, Forbort and Gustafsson were all pending UFA's (rentals), Benning is an RFA thus under team control.
- Marino was a college player and pending UFA who refused to sign with the Oilers.
- Reilly isn't a similar player if you look at results.
