Crow gets a 3rd year, but lower AVV. When he decides to hang them up, he'll likely be LTIR unfortunately.

Next year the Hawks get all of Smiths contract gone.

idk, they're up S***Creek and are trying to shed lots of NTCs so they can sign Cirelli/Cernak/Serg. I don't think they're going to get market rates for ANY trade that isn't Point/Kuch.

Yeah they’re probably just going to be giving away Palat/Johnson/Gourde to whoever is willing to take them, and they waive their NTC.

If Tampa could trade Johnson/Palat/Gourde for a combined return of a 7th round pick with ZERO salary retention, I’d call that a successful offseason

One would think so, but they still managed a 1st last year for JT Miller in a tough cap spot. This year is considerably more challenging, but for some reason I don't think it will be as bad as we all think it will be (and yes I've seen how much cap they have and who they need to sign).

JT miller’s no trade clause didn’t kick in yet which was really important in that trade. Who knows if he would’ve waived. I think they’ll be able to get out of this cap crunch without losing one of their core players. And obviously my comment about receiving a combined 7th round pick was a bit of an exaggeration. But Tampa won’t receive fair market value for any of their secondary scoring pieces they’d want to trade. Killorn would have the highest value, followed by Palat. Johnson is probably #3. Gourde imo will be the toughest to move

Too tight to the cap. 4.2 mil in bonouses and only 200k in space. Not to mention you only have a 21 man roster which is really the biggest issue

I think they will have to pay to move Palat to be honest.
He's not worth 5.3 million.
Last year he scored 8 goals in 64 games. The year before that 11 in 56.
You add in the injury history.
Who the hell in their right mind would want to take on that 5.3 million.
I wouldn't take him on the penguins for free. He's not worth 5.3 million. That's why he's a cap dump in TB.

I guess I just assumed he was a lot better than that. He would be a good fit for Pittsburgh

Caggiula is very valuable to the Hawks. Physical, lots of energy and regularly chips in dirty goals. We honestly don't have a lot of players like him, especially with Shaw on LTIR. So I'm always hesitant when it comes to trading him because I think (right now at least) he's irreplaceable.

All of that said, I think like Palat more. Really good two-way forward who's capable of playing big minutes and can help out on the power play. Honestly, I think he'd be perfect for the Hawks. The injuries are a problem - played a full season this year, but missed 18+ games in three out of the last four and I don't think he'd waive his NTC for Chicago. But if for whatever reason he does and the deal to get him looks like this, I'd pull the trigger 100%.

"Elite" is a stretch lol, but I do think they'd be pretty good. In this scenario, I'd actually switch Nylander and Palat, just because I think (Cat - Strome - Palat) is a lot more balanced as far as a 3rd line goes, while (Nylander - Dach - Kane) can afford to be more pure offense.

I rather have Johnson, but either way the hawks will need a little more breathing room for call ups. Maatta has been getting moved to New Jersey for a 3rd, maybe that could save the hawks 680K and allow them another roster player.

He is alot better then that other poster claims. Very responsible 2 way 200ft winger who is finally healthy this year and on pace for 20+ goals and 50 points. He changed his whole off season regimen and he is back to his triplet days play. He is for most Lightning fans the one we don't want to see traded. He would a great fit for Pittsburgh or any team that got him and well worth his cap hit.

Palat changed his entire off-season regime to help with his injury issues and it really shows this year and no injury issues. He has been great this year on the RW with Cirelli back to how he was playing a couple years ago. If he agrees to be traded he would be a great get for Chicago.

It'll be tight for sure. The bonuses aren't quite as bad as they look. Most of that is if Strome is a top 10 forward in goals/assists/points.

Strangely enough the first thought in my head was “palat wouldn’t honestly waive his NTC for Chicago would he?” I don’t mind the trade as long as palat’s season wasn’t just a flash in the pan, much like killorn’s season. I just don’t think palat is gonna wanna go to a team that isn’t really on the up and up and is more just treading water (barely).

Unfortunately, I do land on the side of hawks fandom that is actually a little more concerned about the long term cap than others. Lots of hawks fans seem to think we have plenty of wiggle room, and sure, we do have mechanisms in place to avoid that. Yet, we have plenty more that will cause us nothing but pain. We don’t know what’s happening with strome. Kuba shouldn’t get too much without arbitration. But then there’s Keith and seabrook. Keith can still play (thank god he proved that this year), but seabrook is really starting to piss me off.

Everyone on here paints as a pessimist, but I’m just trying to be a realist. With the cap staying stagnant for the next 4 years, I don’t see how we can ever compete or put a solid team together with ELCs expiring in the next two years. It’s gonna be a weird NHL for the next half decade.

Flat cap for 4 years, what are you talking about? Flat cap for 2 years then it goes up. Once Seattle revenues hit the books also, it will increase.

The Hawks aren't treading water. If you think Boqvist, Mitchell, Debrincat, Strome, Kubalik, Dach, Nylander (this year's draft pick), Beaudin, Regula, Vlasic, Kurashev, Barratt, Hagel, Highmore is treading water then you should analyze other teams. Hawks are retooling on the fly, have one of the youngest teams right now in the NHL, and easily top third of the NHL in good players/prospects 25 years old and younger. Again, factually they are one of the top 10 youngest teams in the NHL right now.

I just checked that, you’re spot on with the cap. Flat for two years then could go up. However, I’m still skeptical considering how much the cap has gone up (or rather hasn’t) in the recent years. Wasn’t the cap suppose to be at least 83 mil this year until the elevator clause was used to get it to 81.5?

As for treading water, the results don’t show that. You are, with the players you mentioned, very clearly pointing a promising young future. That’s great! That doesn’t mean that as it stands, nothing has changed. Points projection wise, I’m pretty sure this year’s team was almost even with last year’s team. Yet, thank god the NHL gifted us a playoff spot for the sake of ratings. It’s also fair to point out that half those players on that list have proved almost nothing except that they show promise. Keep in mind, I love young talent, and I love teams that build through them. But, as I’m always reminded by you, these youngsters need to prove it first. I’m more worried about the old timers like Keith and seabrook that are standing in their way. I won’t even get into how much I fear JC coaching them.

It’s a great pool they’ve created, especially on defense. Offense still needs pieces though and I don’t know what’s happening with goaltender. They have promise, but that doesn’t mean they’ve stop treading water. Palat has no reason to come here, and that’s fine. We should just stay the course and keep growing through the draft and developing our prospects.

Btw: just out of curiosity, if Kane and toews, hypothetically, retired this year, are suggesting the players we have now would be a playoff roster?

@ChiHawk @HatterTParty great convo.

As far as the cap goes...2021-2022..A.) who do you think Seattle takes? If DeHaan...thats $4.5M. If DeHaan unfortunately gets hurt again...thats $4.5M. B.) I'm a fan of burying Smith vs buyout. Extra $1.5M. C.) Saad's $6M might be found for less. IDK if he extends or not...he might just walk...IDK. BUT drafting is going to be huge. Maybe Stan takes Quinn in preparation for Saad leaving?

They're not swimming in cap space because boqvist/Dach will need extentions soon enough, but we might be able to grab Brodin on a long term deal???

Also, did I hear you guys give Bowman props for syatem development??? Just need to clarify.

Good points/questions. A.) I would think Seattle would take one of de Haan, Carlsson, or even maatta if we keep him past this season. I don’t know if Carlsson is eligible but his name keeps getting thrown around. De Haan’s injury history plays a huge role as you mentioned too. B.) I’m okay with any action that gives us more cap space, so by all means burying Smith is fine by me. C.) Saad is kind of a strange nowadays. I have no idea what’s gonna happen with him whatsoever. He could walk, and in all likelihood probably should if he wants a maximized contract. Then again, how much does he love Chicago? Who we take in the draft is gonna answer a lot of questions. We take Quinn, Saad can leave. We lundell, strome can leave. We Sanderson, Murphy can leave. And so on.

Cap is gonna be rough no matter what for us. Even if Seattle is added as another stream of revenue, we still don’t know when fans will be allowed back. Obviously it should be resolved before Seattle arrives, but next season could still be heavily affected. With dach and boqvist coming off their ELCs in another two years, Kane and toews will still have a year left respectively. I was very nervous about both players burning an ELC year, and hopefully it doesn’t cost us too bad.

As for the prospect pool, I can absolutely say it’s trending in the right direction. Defense is definitely set, but goalies and forwards are big question marks to me though. I still don’t think we’re anywhere even close to a top 5 prospect pool in the league, but we could be a fringe top ten. The only thing I feel right now is trading them away. I don’t want us to sacrifice our future for short term fixes that won’t land us a cup or even a playoff spot. Yeah, Stan has used three years of bad hockey to restock the pool, but please don’t let this go to waste......

A) My guess is they take Caggs...he's young, cheap and impactful. De Haan, Maatta or Carlsson are other options too on D. Carlsson is a RFA so he needs to be protected just like Strome if we want to keep him.
B) Agree on Smith but is it that easy just to bury him? Kampf is interesting as well, good 4th liner and good on the PK. Likely to expose Carps as well but doubt they take him.
C) My guess is Saad will sign a $4.5M for 5 years if the Hawks extend him/re-sign him. Saad had a monster year (for him) this season and obviously is a big impact. Quinn won't be able to step in and take over especially for his 2 way play which we need more of on this team. Can't rely on Kampf, Smith, Toews, Dach and Carps to be the only guys to play defense. Smith should be burried so now we are down to 4 guys that play good defense up front? Out of 12 guys up front, we need 6 that can play decent or better defense IMO, especially as our young defenders continue to develop. I think losing Saad, is the last option to manage the cap when we can buyout/trade Maatta, buyout/burry Smith as first options before considering Saad.

Dach and Boqvist have 2 years left (after the current season) so they will expire after the Seattle revenues flow in for a season, perfect timing for a good cap increase that offseason. This is why it is important the Hawks get Strome and Kubalik to agree to 3 year deals.

I'm beginning to be more and more a fan of drafting Sanderson if possible. He would automatically be our best left sided D prospect/young player. I'm not sure Sanderson is a true #1 but certainly a 2nd liner in a couple years. Like we've all said, the other option is Lundell and that makes Strome available but Lundell would likely need another year of development, so sign Strome to a bridge, then possibly trade him depending how he does and how Lundell develops or alternatively let Kampf walk in the offseason or part of expansion and let Lundell start as the 4th liner.
