However, taking on Boychuk's contract pretty much negates that problem.

You take on Boychuk and you're stuck with him unless you give up a 1st to move him.

Personally I wouldn't do this for the Leafs and I'm pretty sure New Jersey rejects that offer.

Boychuk is a perfectly fine Defenseman, he'd probably help the Leafs on the backend (he still plays 17-18 mins a night) he's a couple million overpaid due to his age only 2 seasons left , figured NJ would be interested cause they want a young RW who can play 2nd 3rd line they have C covered and are also looking for a young LHD that has Top 4 potential - Boychuk covers NJ on the right untill Liljegren is playing Top 4 minutes - it's more than a fair deal for NJ

They don't have the cap space to make the OS after aquiring Marner

Barzal never played on a line with JT. JT doesnt have anything to do with Barzal's lower numbers. New Coach, New System, no freeweeling. Trotz is turning him into a more responsible player.
