Description
Sabres cap for next year is really ~$80 million due to cap overage penalties from last year. With the potential bonuses as well, I think they spend around $76 million next year.

Looking for ideas on a 3rd pairing RD to sign so that Borgen becomes the 7th.

Johansson and Del Zotto dealt at the deadline unless they are really in the hunt. Don't see that happening unless everything goes right. Roslovic can move to 3C if Cozens is not ready.

Open to feedback on the value of Montour and Risto trades, or if you guys think there is a better trade partner.

Lastly, what do you think is the best course of action with Okposo?

Okposo is a really good 4th liner, he will definitely be in the lineup. Trading 8th overall for a 40 point center isn’t a good idea in my opinion, they should keep the 2020 first and trade the 2021 first, like Vancouver did.

We should trade Montour, not Risto. We need a top 6 forward regardless of whom we trade from our rightside. I could see Ottawa, Toronto, Vegas, Calgary, Philly all being interested in a righty, specifically Montour. Risto has more value than a forward with a career high 29 points.

Lastly, what do you think is the best course of action with Okposo?

Keep him for sure and see if he can continue to do well as a checking forward. See if Seattle will take him in the expansion and if not, buy him out

Roslovic is a 3rd liner
Can we please stop bringing in guys & playing them above where they should be???
Risto should be worth more than that- if not, keep him

Why are we trading Montour for picks?
At least use him to get a real RW2, add if necessary

I’d attempt to trade for Domi after the draft
Don’t really wanna give up pick8

Don’t think there’s anything we can do with Okposo. We’re pretty much stuck with him. He won’t be on the bench though. Even though he’s obviously very overpaid, he played well in his 4th line defensive role for us

For the Jets plan A is to sign DeMelo and go with DeMelo, Pionk, Poolman on the right side.

Much more interested in trading for Cozens in this scenario as he's no longer needed as a top 6 C. Roslovic + 2020 1st + ? for Cozens?

Would you rather a lottery protected 2021 first + B prospect after the draft?
Would you do Montour for Duclair? Ottawa adds a pick

Not a small chance MTL do that. We aren’t trading Domi because he’s decent, no he’s good, if he wanted to play winger, there will be no trades. Too many centers, that’s it. Domi Hertl are 40 points players with 1 good season lmao, look at Domi highlight before trashing him

I’m not saying he’s bad. But 8th overall will definitely be better than Domi, in a couple years.

No, might burst out, maybe be as good but not even 50% chance that player will ever hit 70 points

Domi’s 70 points was probably a career year, he will always be 40-50 points in my opinion. This forward class is stacked.

He did 44 points playing with Lehkonen Weal and Cousins, he will do more than 70 when he’ll play with Suzuki and Caufield year after year

Hello my friend, I have not been on for a while.
I hate nearly every Montour trade I see a Sabre AGM propose.
If I were building a team, I think there may be some interest from Calgary to swap Montour for Hanifin.
If compares them on revolving hockey, they are very close.
If one also considers RH gives higher scores to players on good teams, they maybe even.
But let's say Buffalo needs to add a small amount.
Then went to FA and signed Haula or Galchenyuk or both.
They get their #2 LHD and #2 center without giving up a ton of assets.
I anxiously await your comment.

I dig the idea of a Montour for Hanifin swap,
but i wonder if Calgary would just re-sign Hammonic & keep Hanifin?
That’s what I’d do if i were them

As far as 2C...
idk about Galchenyuk or Haula?
I really like Gally his draft year, but his struggles are well documented at this point. Particularly at Center
Haula is a solid player, but can’t stay healthy
Both have upside, but are also VERY risky imo
And it worries me taking a risk at that spot with Eichel getting clearly frustrated with the situation here.
I think we really need to make the playoffs next season

I did see a Reinhart & Cozens for Point trade that i found very interesting
Idk if they’d do that (prob not), but if they did i think they’d also have to include someone like Tyler Johnson to get rid of extra Cap
I’d love to see a deal like that

But realistically...
i think I’d go after someone like Henrique
Can probably get him pretty cheap Bc his contract isn’t great
Tage & a pick?
Or something like that
He’d give us a decent 2C who could transition to be a really good 3C once Cozens is ready to take a 2nd line role

Some other “buy low” types I’d try to get are Josh Anderson & Alex Tuch
Reinhart is our only RW i think we can count on to consistently score in the top9, so adding 1 or 2 of those guys would really help

I don’t think we are gonna get any of the UFAs we’d like,
bc things here are so messed up
So those “buy low” type trades are probably our best bet
They can help get us to the playoffs NOW,
and we can continue to develop our young talent (incl pick8 this year) to the point where hopefully they’re good enough in a few years to contribute to us becoming legit contenders for the Cup
Idk that there’s any “quick fix” that’s gonna put us over teams like Tampa, Boston, the Caps, etc...
so i think that’s the way I’d generally go about things

As usual a very complete and thoughtful answer.
I agree, what free agent would want to come to Buffalo with Kim and Terry running the show?
TBH, I was shocked that Johansson signed last year.
While the experiment at #2 center did not work out, his over all performance was about what I would have expected.

You are correct that they are several pieces away from competing.
But it took epic failures among many players to miss the preliminaries:
Hutton went blind and had a stretch of 0-8-4.
Skinner had a dismal season with only 14 goals.
The PK was beyond terrible.
The PP started out great, but then it digressed to 4 players standing around watching Jack play with the puck looking for an open shot.
Sheary, Rodrigues and Vesey all had the worse year of their short careers.
If any of those had not taken place, I am sure the Sabres would have had one more point.
But collectively, if each item had been at least an average performance, then they are near Toronto in the standings

I am not sold on Krueger, how could he think Sobotka was a #2 RW, ahead of Rodrigues, Okposo, Sheary, Thompson, Mittelstadt?
I did not like how he kept Skinner on the second line.
My son thinks Botterill had a two year plan, and Krueger was his Ted Nolan. A rah, rah coach who would help the team to get a better draft pick.
Then bring in a real coach.
But the little I know about Botterill, I think he did not want to fire the staff and Kim and Terry let him go and brought in their sycophant Adams to do their dirty work.
I have no idea how the team will conduct a draft without scouts.
I know analytics are important, but both Florida and Arizona rely on them and they are not exactly Stanley Cup contenders.

BTW, I am giving up my season tickets now.
I was so excited when Pegula bought the team.
He brought in Terry Murray and Craig Patrick to help with the hockey decisions.
Ted Black to help market the team.
Of course Ted Nolan to help secure the first OA pick.
Then Tim Murray rushed the rebuild only to have the team get the first OA pick finally.

Well if we ever have games again & u go, Lmk, i bartend at the Labatt House. I’ll buy u a beer sir
As far as the mess goes, i don’t even wanna get into it
It is what it is
All the points u made about last season are dead on
Seems we had a perfect sh!tstorm of suck from too many players
Even Dahlin was pretty bad for the first part of the season
Hopefully with a smart move or 2, and the guys still here having bounce back seasons, we’ll FINALLY get into the playoffs and see some real momentum moving in the right direction
I’m always gonna be a fan...
so i guess i might as well be as optimistic as possible, right?
Go Sabres!

I think the Flames would be more inclined to use Hanifin to acquire a RW, they only have two right hand shots up front (Lindholm and Ryan), who are arguably both more effective at centre.

I do like your idea of acquiring Henrique. I hadn't thought of him but definitely still a capable player with the right amount of term until Cozens can be a true 2C, would definitely cost less to acquire.

I never even considered Hanifin a possibility until i saw a Flames fan trying to swap him for Montour straight up
I’m not too in touch with their inner workings,
but i found it interesting he thought he could be available?

As far as a 2C for us...
I’d love a Cirelli, or Domi even, (etc, etc, etc) but those quality guys just don’t get moved very often
And i just don’t know that it would be smart to give up pick8 when we have Cozens (and even Mittelstadt still) who should be able to fill that role sooner or later

I don’t think we can make enough great moves to be a Cup Contender
That will depend on how good our young talent develops
So my realistic (and smart imo) goal is to get talent that can get us to the playoffs ASAP, even if that means Boston or Tampa lick our butts in round1
Let’s at least get there while guys like Dahlin, Cozens, Mitts, Pick8, and so on, are (hopefully) growing into the stud players we’ll need them to be in order to really compete for the Cup

That’s how i see it anyways
