They probably shouldn't even if they know he doesnt want to play there. Now that hes on a contract he has to play there but they could easily flip him for two 3rd round picks tomorrow if they made this trade today

Looking at the current draft table it seems apparent the "Shanaplan" is to acquire many 6th and 7th round picks. Leafs also acquire 2nd and 3rd in a top heavy draft.
Still have all the big guns in 2 top lines.
Solid third shut down third line with 2yrs term who can easily put over 100pts.
Solid shut down pairing 2 pairing. As for the power play i think you could easily add Lehtonen.
Cap space, cap space, cap space, money for Rielly 8mil, Hymen 4.5 mil and Anderson 5mil, in fact Dubas should be trying to resign these guys this off season, Leafs losing one or two or all three of those guys(UFA) at end of 2021.

Muzzin is easily the leafs best defenseman. Grant is a horrible 4th liner so he will be an even worse 3rd liner. Pitlick is extremely mediocre. They also probably shouldn't keep Andersen after this season with his age and workload. Just because that have acquired lots of late picks doesnt mean they should get way less value for their players just so they can get a few late picks that ultimately dont mean that much at all

A top pairing defenseman for a late 2nd and some picks that have almost no value? That's an absolute steal. Would you trade Jeff Petry with an extension for a 3rd, 6th and 7th round pick? That's essentially what the leafs are doing here

he is not a top pairing D man, and we need a good puck moving D man anyway not a defensive D man. We have Chiarot, Weber, Petry and Fleury for that role. We also Have Romanov, Norlinder, Harris and Struble to potentially fill the top pairing hole IF we cannot find an immediate solution for a top pairing puck moving LHD

Muzzin is a top pairing defenseman and is a good puck mover. Check out his transition data, in fact he'd be Montreals 2nd best defenseman in transition behind Mete.

I like Muzzin he is good just IMO is not young enough to still be good enough when we are actually going to be contenders and would rather wait and see what Romanov brings before bringing in another LHD.

Should Romanov be able to play in the NHL, then we can consider moving out a player. He needs to learn the North American game, 1yr in AHL or at least half a season.
Muzzin is a Chiarot just more expensive, another Dubas bad signing $$.

Let's wait and see if Romanov, Norlinder, Harris and Struble can compete in the AHL. Yes, they have upside but not for a couple of years...with the possible exception of Romanov.

The cap issues are what makes this deal valuable for Leafs, adding cap space and picks. Of course, Dubas great negotiating skills earned Muzzin a NMC, really a NMC?
