Description
-Resign Clifford
- Engvall can rotate through bottom 6 LW & RW to give people rest/ injuries
Robertson plays with JT & Marner,
If not:
Hyman-Mathews-Nylander
Miky-Tavares-Marner
Engvall-Kerfoot-Kappy
Clifford-Spezza-Barabanov

As for the D
-Rielly-(Either Dermott or Lehtonen)
-Muzzin-Holl (Shutdown)
-Sandin- (Dermott or Lehtonen)

I personally like the idea of Dermott developing into a top 4 RD IF POSSIBLE, play him with Rielly so there's a Vet and an up and comer. Then Sandin plays with Lehtonen, again, Vet and Up and comer. If either Dermott doesn't prove himself or Lehtonen proves he deserves an increased role, Rielly-Lehtonen, Muzz-Holl, Sandin-Dermott

Have to play Lehtonen and Barabanov out of camp, free agents in the future want to see past free agents get a fair shake after signing in TO from overseas. Otherwise it will be tough to sign free agents and fill out the roster in the future.

Let me know what you think, I'm of the opinion that the sky if falling leafs defense opinion is a bit over-hyped. We all need to stop trading for Dumba, Murphy, Montour & Savard and stop signing Petro or trading Nylander when trying to be realistic.

OH, everyone in LTIR are just depth/injury callups- no order

What would you change?

Do you think his "toughness"/ "grit" is worth signing? I like the idea of having someone who can punch a Bruin in he face WHEN need be in the playoffs. Other than Clifford, Kappy has shown he can get a bit rough and fight, but it drops off pretty bad after that. Not enough face punching ability on this team as it is.

except that he wont punch anyone in the face unless they want to fight him and no bruin will want to fight him because they are trying to win the game and will just skate away and laugh at him if he tries.

I mostly agree with you. I would not sign Clifford and give one of those depth players a chance.

I think Dermott would likely try to go after a 4 year deal at 2+ I believe there are teams out their that would offer 2.5m for a 4 year term in an offer sheet and so I think the leafs will have to offer the 2+ for 3 or 4 years. say 3 years 2.25 m per.

Unless Mikheyev takes off in the playoffs coming back from the injury I think it will be another 1 year show me deal at 1.25-1.5m.

With the above changes you will be able to get a 23rd player on the roster and be under the cap.

Robertson will most likely be with the Marlies.

the Yotes...you mean the team that couldn't generate any offense. Yeah kind of hard to score when you can't move the puck point to point.

And with this D core the Leafs can move the puck to the forwards, Rielly, Holl, Dermott, Sandin all skating puck moving Defensemen

Johnsson has 60 point potential beside matthews and nylander. Hes their best LW'er. Kerfoot is a 3c and nothing more

So would Kerfoot , but Kerfoot can also play C, Johnsson is really the odd man out

Robertson is not old enough to play on the Marlies and is probably too good for Junior, I'd say he has spot on the leafs out if camp and barring any major struggles will see anywhere from 8 - 16 mins a night between 2&3 LW

I forgot the chl/nhl agreement. I don't think the leafs want to rush the Kid. He will be sent to the Juniors. The leaf will also enjoy the entry level contract slide given the contracts that they will need to negotiate in the next couple of years. Having an extra year of entry level with Robertson will help absorb Reilly and Anderson contract impact on the team.

I really like Clifford, but I don't know if resigning him is worth changing that third to a second. They can probably pick up someone who brings the same kind of thing through FA this summer.

Or maybe Clifford gets a PTO contract instead after the Leafs exhaust all avenues regarding players who bring a certain toughness and tenacity.

In this case the Leafs do not owe LA a pick.

Is that true? I was under the impression that is Clifford is resigned for the 2020-21 season the pick is transferred. If its a PTO does that change?

It does as far as I know. If the two sides agree to a contract (without it being a PTO), LA gets the agreed upon pick.

PTOs are entirely different from trades. I'd look at someone else with similar skills set and try getting a better deal that way.

I disagree, I dont think Robertson will be on the Leafs.
I bet he will be on Eurpoe.

Johnsson is a better overall player than Kerfoot
Yes Kerfoot can play C and Johnsson cant.

I'd want to keep Johnsson over him if it made sense to fill that C void another way.

have you ever played hockey? Do you have any idea how difficult it is to backhand a puck across the ice with any speed or accuracy?
There is a reason most defense men do not play their off side. Even pro defensemen can't do it effectively. This isn't some made up issue. This is a fact of life.
They end up playing center field instead of the left side because it's just too hard to do this. And it does cause problems, especially if you are trying to cycle. Because not only do you have to pass it off your back hand, but you have to change your whole stance to receive it. Which is why it effects how teams play.
It's cool though. Handicap yourself.

Jumping in here, I don't think so, at this moment. He struggled before the stoppage, and needs some more time to be a consistent NHLer

I don't think Dermott gets more than the low 2s on an 3+ year deal, due to point totals, which as a dman is the largest statistic in arbitration (4 years takes him right to UFA, so I doubt that's the length)

It's either be two options if he's still a Leaf.

He takes his QO at 874k for a year or they sign him to a 3 year deal at 2-2.25 million.

Average PK time over the last 3 years:
2017-19
Hyman: 2 mins 39 secs
Johnsson: 0 mins 43 secs

2018-19
Hyman: 2 mins 16 secs
Johnsson 0 mins 1 sec

2019-20
Hyman: 1 min 52 secs
Johnsson: 0 mins 13 secs
Miky: 1 mins 55 secs

Hyman and Miky are trusted more in defensive situations

At 5v5 Hyman is bad defensively by almost all public metrics. He is a good penalty killer but at 5v5 he hurts the leafs
