Losing PlayIn Equals Big Change

Description
I am honestly not sure that there is any person alive that could spin a headlines of the Leafs losing to the Blue Jackets in the play-in round as a good, positive thing.

I have my serious doubts that such a defensively-deficient group can get past the Blue Jackets, and if I am right (and I hope I am wrong), some big changes are coming.

Duly note, the deals with Colorado and Philadelphia is a 3-way deal, and works out like this:

To TORONTO:
(1) RYAN GRAVES
(2) PHILIPPE MYERS
(3) ALEX NEWHOOK

To COLORADO:
(1) WILLIAM NYLANDER
(2) SHAYNE GOSTISBEHERE
(3) MORGAN FROST

TO PHILADELPHIA:
(1) TRAVIS DERMOTT
(2) CONOR TIMMINS
(3) TYSON JOST
(4) JEREMY BRACCO
(5) COLORADO's 2020 1st ROUND DRAFT PICK

Hold onto your hats, Leaf fans, that might be a crazy-stressful summer for some of you.

Just pointless for PHI. Their team is looking pretty good as it is, no point making such heavy changes.

Furthermore, knowing that for COL fans Newhook seems to be next to god, they won't be moving him anywhere.

Philly gets fleeced here, I highly doubt either of Colorado or Philadelphia are interested in becoming a worse team so Toronto can get better. Both are favorites for winning the cup

Doesn't look like TO better , they still have next to no cap space, can't really think of a time when a GM made such drastic changes (let alone a level headed gm) to a team that is still in the midst of a rebuild - make no mistake the Leafs are still currently in thier rebuild - the F core is basically built , they have a solid future Top 4 D pairing in Sandin and Liljegren, and have had their current coach for all of 5 mins - it's not some crazy world to see how 1 or 2 of Johnsson, Kerfoot or Kapenen are easily moved to create space for another NHL Defense man (even though the Leafs currently have 7 of those as it is)

I like Nylander a lot, but I don't think he's a guy the Avs give up 5 good pieces for. Graves, Newhook, the first, and a B prospect seems more in line. I don't think Sakic is interested in giving up Newhook though, as he's the only high end C prospect the team has.

I think there is a bigger danger of losing in the play in to be honest. A best of 5 can get out of hand so fast and teams will be rusty and loose to start. It's a crap shoot, but any team making it past that round, they take on a team that hasn't played any meaningful hockey yet which gives them an advantage. No matter what happens in the play in, no smart organization is going to put too much stock into it. If TO loses oh well, the pandemic year was nuts. If they win, who cares, the pandemic year was nuts.

I agree although I would very much like to find a way to get Myers out if Philly. I really like his game. Fans on here will say it starts with Nylander because every right handed defenceman is worth Nylander plus apparently. Something based around Kap should be enough but I am not sure Philly would do that.

The 3-way explanation makes it seem that way, but they only get Nylander when you look at the end result.

Don't think anyone would try to make losing the play in a positive (unless they win Laf), but making drastic changes based on the result of a 3-5 game series after a multi-month layoff is inadvisable.

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. Congrats on the effort. I think the biggest hurdle in this plan is getting the avs to give up that much youth I just don’t see them doing it.

Ah, I see now. I was looking at it backwards. My critique now would be that the team probably wouldn't want Ghost for the same reason they moved Barrie. Plus he's LD and they would need RD, especially after moving Timmins.

It looks much better when I read it correctly though. Doh!

I agree , the likely hood of TO moving Nylander is pretty much none existent without a comparable Top 2/3 RHD coming back with similar term , age and AAV unless that player is coming back it's pretty much pointless to move a 24 year old 30 goal 60/70 pt F who can play all 3 positions

If the Avs sign Barrie in FA, can we trade him to the Leafs for Nylander? We'll even throw in Donskoi. Lol.

Lol doubt it, but if I'm honest I never had a problem with Barrie , Babs got stubborn with him , Keefe used his strengths and regardless of what this site and leaf fans have to say Tyson Barrie saved the Leafs from crashing and burning while both Muzzin and Rielly were out with Injury - Barrie played 25 mins a night on a new team with a new coach in a new system - I'm quite content with what Barrie provided the leafs

Ghost has zero value to the Avs, Frost is at best a lateral move off of Jost, and while Nylander would be great that’s a massive overpay including both Timmins and Newhook.

I love Barrie. Good player and good person. I'll pull for him wherever he goes. I'm a little surprised it didn't work out better in Toronto, but I guess you never really know how pieces will all fit together. Agree with your assessment though. Avs fans gave him a lot of undeserved crap too. I guess it's just one of the harsh realities for offensive minded defensemen.

Not that he is a god, but kid tore up NCAA as a true frosh he was better than Caulfied, Turcotte and Boldy and will be a cost controlled entity and imo a 70pt 2C for the Avs. Factor in how his projected timeline works with Kadri’s contract and the Avs aren’t selling low on him.

Rarely does a team aquire a player and it instantly click - generally players who get traded tend have an adjustment period where there numbers dip a bit - in Barrie's case it certainly didn't help Babs was stuck on turning Barrie into a shut down defender which he is not and will never be

Avs wouldnt even consider this trade, and they probably wouldnt even have the cap space to keep everyone long term anyway, especially after you take most of our cheap deapth forwards and ELCs.
