Description
"Loui Eriksson and Johnny Boychuk. Two old vets with terrible, but almost identical contracts. After their 2020 bonus' were paid, Eriksson is owed $5m and Boychuk $5.25m over the next two years. So here's the plan.

Management for both teams approach their respective player and ask if they'd consider a mutual contract termination. They could even threaten to bury the players in the AHL for two years, but that doesn't look good on the team unless the player is clearly no longer at NHL caliber. Instead of making such a threat they could allow the player's agents to come to an informal agreement with the other team's GM to sign a new contract for the remaining amount owing on their current contract. This type of permission is granted to agents frequently if a player and team are looking for a trade partner that the player would approve an extension with. It would look like this:

Eriksson and VAN mutually terminate contract -- Eriksson signs a new contract with NYI for $5m for one season.
Boychuk and NYI mutually terminate contract -- Boychuk signs a new contract with VAN for $5.25 for one season.

As far as I can tell this doesn't violate league rules as the teams aren't trying to re-sign their same player to lesser deals. The players would need to agree to play for a new team for a year, but they'd be getting the remaining salary that's owed to them currently over two years in a one year deal instead. That would have to be enticing"

For the Islanders this would accomplish a couple things;
1) Getting a depth forward for one year
2) Freeing up cap space after 2021 when RFAs Beauvillier, Pelech, Bellows and (presumably) Sorokin need to be re-signed

Tell that to Washington/Colorado about Orpik. Also, I'm really not sure if it technically is lol

I mean, it feels like this would somehow be against the rules. I don't know them well enough to know for sure though. I don't know to what extent the NHL's involvement can possibly be. Can the NHL intervene and nix signings, etc if they feel its against the nature of the CBA but technically against the rules?

From what I can tell it seems like it should be fine to do but it'll come down to whether the NHL would intervene or not.

I’m not positive if that’s legal betting players union wouldn’t be ok with it. If it is a legit way around it league will let it slide then reopen CBA negotiating with union for rule changes. As part of that I’d bet CBO comes back up and every team is granted one except van and islanders for causing this crap storm.

I'm guessing the NHLPA would have zero problem with it; their players are still getting paid what they're owed. It would be the league that would have frowny faces, and they probably would add clauses in future CBA's to prevent it.

Like I said in my other ACGM though, this would all be avoided if they just made the cap hit on a contract reflect the actual earnings each year rather than having salary variation over the term with an average AAV. It would allow teams more cap flexibility to structure contracts and there would be no way to circumvent the cap.

Canucks should just trade Loui to the Habs for Alzner.

Even if Alzner is still benched, at least he'll be close to home (birthplace is B.C.) and the Habs enjoy European experiments.

I agree with second part.
I just find it hard to believe union or league would allow it.

Colorado CBO Orpik not termination so completely different scenarios. This definitely is cap circumvention and even though isn’t spelled out in black/white in the CBO just like the Kovalchuk signing Bettman would knix it. What wouldn’t stop a team like Toronto taking it a step further and agreeing to and acquiring pay salary cap dumps from other teams a nice FO position?

I’ve suggested a straight-up 1 for 1 Eriksson/Boychuk trade one the past that I think works for both sides. That said, I like this more for obvious reasons.

I don’t know the CBA very well so I’m not totally sure if this is legal. Even if it was, both players would have to agree to it - who knows if they would be okay with losing the extra year. It’s definitely cheating. The question is is it legal cheating lol

This is truly creative thinking. I would imagine that the two teams would consult with the NHL beforehand. No one can afford the spectacle of finalizing and announcing a deal and then having it reversed by the League office.
