Avs fans know better than most how difficult it is to build a good D group, having suffered through a decade+ after Blake left with garbage in the top 6, and Dmen like Girard are worth their weight in gold, and you do not trade Dmen like him for 2nd line forwards who are comparatively much easier to acquire.

Girard is a 21 year old transition monster, who is our best shutdown Dman (don't let his size fool you). His $5m x 7 year contract is already looking like one of the best contracts in the league. All of which makes Girard more untouchable at this stage than Byram, which is something Montreal fans really need to realise.

As for your idea of Domi + 9th overall: Avs are contenders and have no reason to move our #2/3 Dman right now for a mystery box and a top 6 forward who we can acquire with lesser assets (or arguably don't even need given that we're already a top scoring team).

He's a No.2 Dman paid $5m for 7 years. Granted, that contract looked even sweeter when the cap looked to be rising, but it's still going to age nicely.

Even if it's just top 25 that's still on the level of being the best contract on many teams.
