Its going to cost a lot more to get rid of Boychuck. While I appreciate you understanding how difficult it is going to be for the Islanders to navigate the disaster cap situation they have to deal with. I still think long term its just as bad. You have many candidates of guys that could easily turn into the next Andrew Laad. Lee is already overpaid, Nelson I don't think will live up to his contract nor will Bailey, Eberle or Paguea. In 2 more years you are in the same boat paying other teams to take aging vets so you can afford younger and better talent.

I personally think that's fair for 1 year of Boychuk. It's comparable to the deal we made with Vegas when they took Grabovski off our hands. Nelson is the "safest" to live up to his contract. But I don't know if it will be *that* much worse for another 3 or so seasons unless the skill level of the core falls off the face of the Earth

Edit: I could also swap Boychuk to Varlamov ($5x2) who should still be a starting goalie by then if Seattle wants to go that route. I would keep JB and switch out the Edler signing for a vet min LD. Still under cap in that scenario.

Just look at 22/23 only 14 players under contract and you'd need to sign Dobson with only 11 million in cap space. The Islanders have the worst long term cap situation in the league.

Why couldn't someone take a bridge? $11m seems like enough. Could also see about moving Varlamov at that point (who would be on an expiring deal). I agree the Isles cap space isn't great but every team has to make adjustments year to year.

You need to sign more than just him though, you'll need another 5 players to get to a 23 man roster after Dobson.

I follow you, but I'm not looking at 2022-23 right now if I'm GM. You can make a move at that time if necessary. Leafs made a small roster work this year (with admittedly some circumvention). Just because the cap dance is difficult doesn't mean impossible
