That's a delusional take. Montreal would jump at the chance of moving Price's bloated contract especially for a goaltender who's posting better numbers and costs 1/3 of the caphit. Not to mention getting 3 prime young assets in return as well. Needless to say I don't think Montreal would blink before ripping Sakic's arm off if offered this deal.

You really don’t know Bergevin then, this is a POOR offer for Price. Pretty sure he blocks Sakic number with that offer. Bergevin said Price is untouchable and is franchise goalie. Bergevin DOESNT want to trade him at all, why can’t you understand that. Now I’m mad, you guys are sooooooo annoying if you think one second that Price is a capdump or not the best goalie in the league. Year after year players are saying he IS the best. Bergevin thinks the same, it’s useless doing Price trade here, but they come all the time from MTL fans. Sorry about that, but in reality, Price is worth Byram 1st ++ for Bergevin

The players might think he's still one of the best goalies, but statistically he is already declining and hasn't posted a season worth his contract in several years. He's 32 and is signed for $10.5m for another 7 years, and that contract is only going to get worse as time goes on.

The Athletic did a recent article ranking the best goalie tandems in the league in terms of 'bang-for-your-buck', and Montreal ranked 28th (ahead of only Detroit, San Jose, and Florida).

https://theathletic.com/1859104/2020/06/08/bang-for-your-buck-ranking-all-31-goalie-tandems-based-on-their-salary-cap-hit/?source=dailyemail

Quote:
28. Montreal Canadiens
Goaltending rank: 18th | Cap hit rank: First | Difference: minus-17

Unlike the first three teams on this list, the Canadiens didn’t necessarily get poor goaltending this season. Carey Price hasn’t produced Vezina-caliber numbers in a few seasons and his .909 save percentage is well below his lofty expectations. But players around the league still agree he’s one of, if not the best goalie in the game, and he had his share of moments where he kept the Canadiens in games this season. The issue for Montreal is Price’s league-high goaltender salary of $10.5 million per season. Even with a minimal backup salary (Charlie Lindgren makes only $750,000), the Canadiens still have the highest overall goalie cap hit in the league. Paying goalies a combined $11.25 million is one thing, but paying that for slightly below average goaltending is another.

And here's who ranked 1st... wink

Quote:
1. Colorado Avalanche
Goaltending rank: Sixth | Cap hit rank: 26th | Difference: plus-20

What a great value Pavel Francouz has turned out to be for the Avalanche. The 30-year-old Czech had never started an NHL game in his career prior to this season, but rattled off a 21-7-4 record with a .923 save percentage and 13.06 GSAA. Francouz made some of the most spectacular saves of the season and did it all for less than a $1 million cap hit. Phillip Grubauer deserves credit, as well. He started the most games for Colorado this season and tallied a solid 6.48 GSAA himself. Combined with Francouz, Grubauer helped give the Avalanche rock-solid goaltending for a very low cap hit. That allowed Colorado to finish with more than $5 million cap space, the most of any team that qualified for the playoffs. Next season Francouz’s salary jumps up to $2 million, but the Avalanche are still in great shape salary cap-wise.

Contract won’t get worse because the team will be better in the next years. We are close to finish the retooling, is numbers will go up. He is good, the team in front of him, not so good + he doesn’t have a backup goalie

The contract was signed with the idea that the cap would continue to rise, and with a flat cap it is a huge obstacle.

I agree that the team will likely be better soon, but that will come at the price of paying the young players well. When all the young guys like Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Caufield, Romanov, etc come off their ELC's in a couple of years Montreal are going to wish they had more capspace, and $10.5m for a then-35 year old Price (for another 4 years) will look dreadful, especially if he continues to decline statistically.

Ok Just had to weigh in here. The stats show that p
Price is on the decline huh?

1. Montreal faced on of the most high danger chances in the league this season. Meaning they gave up the most shots from the inner slot than any other team in the league. I don't care how good of a goalie you are if you face that many inner slot shots your numbers are going to get inflated.

2. They lost a league high 20 games by 1 goal. Again this is on the team, no goal scoring when Price has kept them in games. Price cannot score the goals for the team but he certainly kept them in those games.

3. The Habs faced the most odd man rushes in the league this year. Another team defense issue!

4. Price was at the top or near the top of the league in shots faced as well.

5. Goalies do not age the same as players do. Roy, Luongo and Broaduer were all still elite goalies even after the age of 35 because they had better teams in front of them than Price has ever had. Price's numbers were pretty good when you consider how many of the above categories the Habs lead the league in this year, plus the many more I didn't list. Think Grubauer could have had the same numbers this year in Price's shoes? I don't!

You've presented some interesting information. But that doesn't change the fact that he's going to be paid $10.5m until he's 39. And as he ages you'll probably need to spend more on a backup as well. That's a big chunk of change that Montreal spends on goalies for a very average statistical output - certainly when compared to other tandems around the league (eg. Dallas, Boston, Colorado, etc).

It may be true that the team defense sucks, but the solution to that is to FIX THE TEAM DEFENSE (I know, crazy idea right), rather than overpaying your goalie.

The $10m+ contracts handed out to Price, Vasilevsky, and Bobrovsky were handed out based on the assumption that the cap would continue to rise to $90m+ during the duration of those contracts, but that obviously looks unlikely at the moment and thus hurts these teams quite a bit.

Hindsight is always 20/20 So yeah it hurts them NOW but there was no way to know at the time of the signings that the virus would hit and shutdown the league for the better part of 6 months.

As for point 1. We don't actually need to spend more on a backup. We need a fill in for 1-2 years before Primeau is ready for tandem duty with Price.

Team defense is finally headed in the right direction as well with Romanov, Norlinder, Harris and Struble all ready or close to ready for NHL duty, which will help with Price's numbers.
