Description
Leafs win the lottery, then trade down to pick Drysdale instead of Laf. Red Wings get their star. Leafs get their Stud RD. Admittedly unrealistic, and probably bad for the Leafs, but they have so much wing depth already, and Drysdale would be a fantastic add.

Obviously I hope this is not necessary and the Leafs go on a playoff run, but I've been a leafs fan long enough to know that playoff runs are basically out of the question.

I was thinking that might be an issue. Maybe subtract the worse second and add detroits first from next year?

Detroit isn’t trading any upcoming first as its most likely another top 5 pick. We are good just sitting at 4 and the letting the hockey gods pay us back in 2022 with Wright.

that makes sense. However, this deal would prevent the need to leave it up to the luck of the lottery again. It guarantees a first overall pick rather than hoping the hockey gods look your way

Honestly if Leafs got 1OA i would keep it or If Detroit agreed to give us the 4OA and Seider I would be okay with it for the following reason. With the 4th OA toronto drafts Drysdale and in a year our Dcore would look like

    Rielly-Seider
    Muzzin-Holl
    Sandin-Drysdale

Combine that with the Big 4 on offense and thats just as good as getting Laf. Sandin-Drysdale eventually become the 2nd pairing and leafs will have a solid defense for the next 3-5 years.

Detroits 2020 1st and second add up to 67.6 of 100, they'll need to add like a 12th or 13th overall to equal the pick value, IDK if Detroit has a prospect that is equal to that

Value is probably fine but Detroit is a few players away from actually creating a contender. We have some young guys that will hopefully add to Larkin, Mantha, Bert, and Hronek but we aren’t a Lefreniere away from bottom of the basement standings. I’d personally also rather trade with LA or Ottawa to get Byfield or Stutzle as it would be cheaper than 1OA and give us some center depth. Our goal this offseason in my eyes is to lock up our RFAs and acquire futures through cap dumps or FA to be flipped at TDL. Eventually the hockey gods have to throw us a bone I’m pretty sure we’ve dropped the most spots by any team since the new lottery was introduced (9 in total). 3 in 2017 (DAL, PHI, VGK), 1 in 2018 (CAR), 2 in 2019 (NYR, CHI), 3 in 20 (TBD, LAK, OTT).

If the Leafs somehow get the 1st overall pick, you just draft Laff. And then I'd keep him for 3 years and then see exactly how I'd alter the lineup. Any other scenario is just silly. Having Matthews, JT, Marner, Laff and Nylander as well as Robertson, Kapanen and the rest is just silly. No one could defend that lineup for long. What about the defence? Honestly? Who cares. Under Keefe's system the team would collapse to the front, keep shots outside and then once they regain possession, they will score so much that it would break teams. They would just need to find some 4th liners who can kill penalties and the team would be just insane.

I based that trade off of Corey Pronmans draft ratings. Personally I'm not a super big prospects guy, so it could definitely be off.
