Like the lineup, don’t think Petro signs for that. You could maybe sign Brodie to 5.5-6 mil and use the extra space to resign Clifford or obtain a useful forward in UFA

Why though? You can keep both for 3 years and then figure out what you are doing. That would be 3 years of having an unstoppable top 9. Imagine having Laff and Robertson on the 3rd line facing 3rd and 4th lines regularly and at home sending them against 2nd liners while getting Matthews or JT out against 3rd liners? It would be hilarious

Good luck signing Pietro to that.

He's not getting under 9 million unless it's on a 7-8 year deal.

Its not about being able to afford everyone, its about trading a piece to get a top pairing defenseman while losing minimal offensive power and also clearing cap space to afford Riellys and Freddys extensions

You could have Robertson and Laff on ELC's on a dominant 3rd line and supplement them with contracts all around 1 million. That would mean you can afford Rielly's deal and figure out what to do with Andersen, all the while letting the young defence come up and get better and better with a huge safety net of having an insurmountable offensive juggernaut to deal with upfront. The Leafs would have the puck always, they'd wear teams down by getting either a tonne of goals or by never being out of a game since their 3rd line could very well be better than some teams top lines and the defence would be able to just be relaxed knowing that they are never going to be in a really bad position. Give them some experience to iron out the problems and this team would be just nuts with Laff. I don't see why you'd just move out elite players for a lesser defenceman who is likely much older than who you are moving out and now you have less offense and perhaps not even a big upgrade defensively since we don't yet know how good, Dermott, Lehtonen, Sandin and Liljegren are going to be. What if they all pan out nicely? We are even in a better position. I think with the Leafs style, talent, speed and player development skills, they will make very good NHLers out of all those 4 and that means we could have affordable and valuable depth on the blueline for the foreseeable future. Just thinking immediately that we'd have to trade Marner or Nlyander for I am not even sure what, but I imagine it will be for a vastly lesser player, (Nylander for Pesce) or for an older player like moving Marner for futures to sign Pietrangelo. It may make for a still dominant roster but it could be younger and far more dangerous.

I think it'd be more for a young stud RD, not someone whos older but a defenseman thats on the top of Dubas' wishlist. Marner for Philippe Myers + or something potentially. Also, I think Laf would instantly be in the top 6 with JT and Nylander since hes really going to be a superstar

Maybe but unless we are getting a 23 year old stud dman under a terrific contract I would just roll with what we have.b

It'd have to be the right guy for sure, if it was Adam Fox for example, I think the Leafs would have to pull the trigger if they got Lafreniere plus they'd clear so much cap space by moving Marner. No one can replace what Marner brings to the team but they just have to replace enough to make it worth bringing in a greta young defenseman and save millions in a cap that won't be going up significantly for many years

Kerfoot is at least a center, he would have good wings and can play on the 2nd offensive line.

This is a good trade option for MN to have open for them. It's not my 1st choice, but I'll take this over the Domi and Strome (CHI) trade I see on here any day. Strike out on say a Cirelli OS/trade, and no Chucky/Haula as UFA signings happen, Kerfoot is a solid plan C to have to fill the 3C hole for the next 3 seasons.

A 30 year old dman is not taking a bridge deal to become a FA again at 33, hes bound to get a 6-8 year deal for big money as his last contract.
