Would rather keep the 1st and play Sprong where Kapanen is. Sprong can put up the same numbers Kapanen would. And Jensen > Bogosian.

What's a trade you'd consider for Jensen alone?

mmmm no not really. People drastically underrate Sprong. Kid is very very good. Him and Kapanen are very similar: speedy forwards with great wristers (Sprong more so). Both capable of 40-60 points depending on time and special teams. They'd do the exact same things. I'm not spending a 1st to get the same results, especially if that means getting Bogosian over Jensen.

No, he really isn't. No, they really aren't. Kapanen is, Sprong isn't. They really don't. You would be spending a first to get an actual NHL level player "capable of 60 points" in your own words. Trading Jensen and signing Bogosian have nothing to do with one another.

Sprong is a train wreck. He may or may not have the skills to be an NHLer, but he certainly does not have the head for it. Alexander Daigle might be a better comparison, but Daigle had much more skill... but cut from the same cloth.

Yes they are the same player. Sprong is a better shooter, Kapanen is better defensively, but they'd both get the same results. Sprong will be what Con was for the Caps in his last season. He'll play in your middle 6 and get 20+ goals a season, 30 if he got 1PP time which is possible if Oshie moves on.

Jensen and Bogosian have everything to do do with one another. The trade is Jensen+1st for Kapanen. So we'd lose Jensen and have to sign the horrific Bogosian. So to sum it up: Caps are trading a 1st to downgrade their defense and get the same results on offense. Pass.

Then you sign someone other than Bogosian, the trade and the UFA signing are not related.

Kapanen is easily worth #30ish pick, and moving Jensen out doesn't hurt.

I've seen a lot of Sprong. The best thing for the Caps to do is to let him go to Europe or wherever he wants to go that isn't Washington DC.

Yes Kapanen is worth a pick around 30 but Caps don't need to be the team that does it, some other team can make that deal.

We'll see what happens with Sprong, but I bet he ends up being a top 9 player for the Caps. They didn't trade Djoos, a player they thought was a good NHL player, to just get a player that will go to Europe.

Well, they traded Djoos to move out a guy that they didn't want and to take a flyer on a guy that another team didn't want.

Sprong put up a lot of points for WBS, but failed horribly when in Pittsburgh, mostly because of his head as opposed to his hands. In December 2018 he was ejected to Anaheim in a trade that Duck's fans loved, for about two weeks. He got a goal in his first game and was getting 15-17 minutes per game. In got 14 goals in 47 games in Anaheim, that's a 25 goal rate, yet by March was consistently getting under 10 minutes a game. He was then waived at the start of this season and no one, including the Caps, took him. He spent all but a couple weeks in January (injury call-up) in the AHL, including after his trade to the Caps.

When you are scoring at a 25 goal rate and you get pushed so far down the lineup that you actually get waived... there is a reason.

Kids are young. Some mature later than others. Caps beat reporter put out there that the Caps really liked Sprong and had plans for him. We'll see what happens. I'd be veru surprised if he wasn't on the roster next season.

I see your points. I would easily give up our late 1st for Kapanen as he could be a cheaper version of Oshie. But it would, of course, be wise to try out our in-house options first. If Sprong or someone else works out, great!
Then we can keep our 1st rounder, but until that I think we have a hole on our right side, especially if we’re going to offer Oshie and his contract to Seattle.

In a perfect world I would want the same return as we gave up, a 2nd rounder, but he wasn’t a good fit so I would trade him for a 3rd, even a 4th if Caps aquired a RHD in another trade or in FA.
