Description
If the Canucks miss the playoffs this year, they retain their 2020 pick and have a 12.5% of FOA pick and NJ gets unprotected 2021 first round pick. However, what would NJ give up the first round pick THIS YEAR? I’m suggesting a second round pick next year. Would you do it? Who adds?

You are well aware that we'd probably be better off with a 2021 unprotected first, so why should we add something at all? It's Vancouver that would need to add in this situation.

I dont understand the logic behind this post? Feel free to elaborate. Not hating.

If the Canucks lose the play in, they are 100% keeping their first with the chance at 1st overall. Even if they dont win and pick in the teens they keep it IMO. Especially since they dont have a 2nd which was sent to LA for Toffoli. They would have no pick the first two rounds of this draft. I think they would bet on themselves to have a worse/ higher pick next season with a young developing team that is only getting better. Not to mention the already deep prospect pool they can add another player to sooner than later to keep supplementing the future core with other young cheap talent.

NJ is giving more because they get a 12.5% chance at the first overall pick this year and they are getting a pick this year vs next. It is unlikely that Vancouver would be one of the two worst teams next year, so the odds of getting FOA are higher than they would be. Second, even if Vancouver loses the lottery, NJ still ends up with a pick in the teens.

Agree with all your arguments. However, is getting a second round pick next year enough for Vancouver to give up the chance for FOA this year? If not, how much would NJ need to add for Vancouver to do the trade?

If Vancouver wins, they’re not doing that

No I dont think its worth the chance of skipping out on possibly having the 1st overall pick to gain a 2nd next year. This years draft is deeper than next year Ive heard, especially through the first round. So Canucks would still get a good player picking in the first half of this draft which may not be guaranteed next year.
